Teen in Critical Care Following Thursday Night Crash - Monroe, CT ...

Thomas Marshall, 18, is in the intensive care unit at St. Vincent's Medical Center after losing control of his 2003 Honda and hitting a tree while driving on Purdy Hill Road at approximately 9:02 Thursday night. Prior to the accident, police said Marshall had been staying with his grandparents in Monroe.

The accident occured within 350 feet of Cedar Lane and officers found the Honda off of the roadway, according to the report. Police said no passengers were in the car.

Monroe Volunteer Fire Department spokesman Kevin Catalano said Marshall was treated by Monroe Volunteer EMS and AMR medics at the scene for what appeared to be serious injuries.

Monroe and Stepney volunteer firefighters had to extricate Marshall from the car.

"It was a very challenging rescue because the driver was severely pinned in the wreckage and the car was in a ditch in the woods," Catalano said.

Firefighters removed the doors, entire roof, and had to raise the dash board using hydraulic tools to free Marshall's legs and it took around 30 minutes to get him out of the car, according to Catalano.

Police officers closed the roadway for several hours, while its accident investigation team worked at the scene.
