Do iPhone 4 and 4s screens really scratch that easily?

I always hear about people complain about iPhones screens being "easy" to scratch.

Surely the newer iPhones would be LESS susceptible to scratching, no?

My newer iPhones I've always had screen protectors since day 1 so I've never had a scratch on my 3G, 4, or 4S. But I ask because my original iPhone has been screen-protector-less since day 1 (5+ years old now), and has no scratches at all, and I still use it (full-time right now since I'm selling my 4S)
