Business Continuity | PowerSource Online Magazine

By: Stephen Jepson, Hardware.com

Ask yourself the question. Could my business survive after this?

During the Taiwanese floods of 2011 and despite one of its key sites being under 30ft of water, Western Digital remained in operation. It?s an often quoted statistic, but one worth repeating, that ?around 60% of small businesses go out of business six months after a natural disaster such as a fire or flood?. Being a large multi-national, Western Digital have an inherent advantage in that they have data centres located around the world that can host data and applications that may have been hosted in Thailand. Whereas most small businesses don?t have such privileges they can take action to mitigate the outcome of any disaster. So here are Hardware.com?s five top tips ?Business Continuity? for the rest of us.

1. Be prepared
Plan for all eventualities large and small but allocate time and effort commensurate with the size of the problem caused by the disaster.

2. Be agile
Make sure the systems you deploy are capable of being used anywhere, using products like Vmware. Make sure you can use remote terminal or web sessions to access your critical applications.

3. Be realistic
Decide what level of data loss and what level of time outage your company can survive and trade it off against how much resource you want to put into a disaster recovery solution.

4. Be holistic
Business Continuity doesn?t depend on IT and data systems alone. If your people have nowhere to work in the event of a disaster then your IT DR planning may come to nothing.

5. Be prepared
I know I?ve already written about preparedness, but it?s the most important. Create your plan(s) and test them regularly. Be prepared to be flexible and deviate from any steps if it makes sense. Recovery Strategy Backup is only the first step in a Recovery Strategy. The ability to recover data within a particular time frame (Recovery Time Objective) from a particular point in time (Recovery Point Objective) is what any Recovery Strategy is about. Having said that, the first action in data recovery is to have at least one backup.

The second is to move it away from your main data store. In its simplest form this can be a removable disc or tape secured in the company secretary?s bag that is taken home at the weekend. In its more advanced form it is the replication of data over wide area links between data centres. The technologies involved here are:

  • The bag Despite the cost savings and simplicity of this method it is not the most secure and fastest way to recover systems.
  • The online backup Online backup services do offer a more advanced level of security, however these still involve slow restore times that depend on normal internet bandwidth.
  • Host replication Software such as Vmware Site Recovery Manager allow near real time mirroring of individual servers between data centres.
  • Storage replication Most entry level storage devices such as the HP P2000 G3 and P4000 include* inter-site replication to allow near real-time replication of entire data volumes over IP networks.

* Additional cost option with P2000. Included with P4000

The graph above shows the improvement in recovery times (RTO) against the cost of solution for various tiers of recovery strategy, from PTAM (pick-up truck access method) to automated, data replication and redundant data centres.

It could be argued that virtualization and its associated technologies are making the curve a lot shallower by bringing multi-site, near real-time recovery solutions within the range of SMEs.

Now, let?s examine data storage and how it can speed up data recovery times and mitigate loss in disaster situations.
Store more with less is the mantra on many storage vendors? brochures but how do they achieve this?

Most vendors now embrace thin provisioning technology where the storage device only provides the blocks where data has been written while fooling the server that all its empty space is available as well.

Consider a 2TB data volume that has only 1TB of data written to it, which represents a 50% saving on the physical disc space. We have all experienced data compression utilities like WinZip on our desktops that compress files by eliminating empty space and recurring values within files, usually allowing us to email files that would otherwise fall foul of size limits. Some storage vendors such as NetApp and Tintri employ compression by caching and compressing the data in NVRAM before writing it to disc. The physical disc savings for compression depends on the susceptibility of the data to compression. Word documents will compress more than video files for example, but savings of 10% or more can be expected.

The same vendors save further space by de-duplicating data at the block level. Think of a file server with multiple copies of identical or similar documents. From the storage point of view, these are made up of many similar or identical blocks of data which can therefore be reduced to one block with multiple pointers so the other copies can be built from the one.

Hard discs are getting larger and cheaper so why store more with less, why not just store more with cheaper discs. By compressing and de-duplicating data we can keep more copies of our data and transport it over network links to more locations which in turn allows us to have much faster recovery times and recovery points to aid our business continuity plans. Also, no matter how fast discs reduce in price and increase in capacity we will still outstrip their capabilities by our desire to store more and larger data.

Eminent Marxist historian Hobsbawm dies aged 95

LONDON (Reuters) - Renowned British left-wing historian Eric Hobsbawm, whose writing influenced students and politicians across Europe, died in a London hospital on Monday aged 95, the BBC reported.

He died in the early hours of the morning in London's Royal Free Hospital, where he was being treated for pneumonia.

"He will be greatly missed, not only by his wife of 50 years, Marlene, and his three children, seven grandchildren and great grandchild, but also by his many thousands of readers and students around the world," a family statement said.

Hobsbawm won critical acclaim with a four-volume history of Europe in the 19th and 20th centuries, which was translated into 40 languages. His bestselling memoirs charted the pivotal moments in modern European history through which he lived.

Hobsbawm was born into a Jewish family at Alexandria, Egypt in the year of the Russian Revolution, 1917, and grew up in Vienna and Berlin before moving to London as a teenager in 1933 as Adolf Hitler was rising to power in Germany.

He joined the Communist party aged 14, and went on to be closely associated with Britain's left-wing Labour party, over which he was seen to have a strong influence in the 1980s and 1990s. He was once described by former Labour leader Neil Kinnock as "my favourite Marxist".

Hobsbawm maintained his commitment to Marxism even after the Soviet invasion of Hungary in 1956.

Years later he said he had "never tried to diminish the appalling things that happened in Russia", but had believed in the early days of the communist project that a new world was being born.

World Routes Kicks Off in Abu Dhabi - Business Review India

ABU DHABI, UAE, September 30, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --

2,800 delegates, 750 airports and 300 airlines gather in the capital of the UAE for the world's largest commercial aviation event ?

40 airline CEOs and 16 tourism ministers expected

World Routes, the 18th World Route Development Forum was officially opened today by Abu Dhabi Airports Company's (ADAC) CEO, James Bennett. ?The event, which takes place over four days, will attract 2,800 senior professionals who represent over 300 airlines and 750 airports as well as numerous governments, destinations and tour operators.

There are more airline delegates registered this year than at any previous event, representing all leading airlines including Lufthansa, British Airways, Air France/KLM, Etihad, Emirates, United Airlines, LATAM, COPA, South African, Air China, China Eastern Airlines and Qantas as well as airports from around the globe. ?The event will also see more senior executives in attendance than in previous years, with 40 airline CEOs and 250 airport CEOs and board members as well as 16 tourism ministers registered to attend. Carriers which have confirmed that their CEO will be in attendance in Abu Dhabi include Kenya Airways, Air Arabia, CSA-Czech Airlines, Etihad Airways, Vueling and Air Seychelles.

On the first day of the event the World Route Development Strategy Summit, which takes place alongside World Routes, was launched with a keynote speech by ADAC CEO, James E. Bennett. ?The summit provided a platform for industry leaders to discuss key on-going topics that impact this dynamic and ever-evolving industry. ?Key topics highlighted during the summit included: taxation; rising oil prices; aeropolitics; environmental factors; sustainable route development; economic development; and, general regional perspectives on aviation and its potential for growth.

Along with the summit opening, Routes held a joint press conference with Abu Dhabi Airports Company to announce the launch of the event and to engage with the 180 accredited journalists on Route Development strategies and trends. ?In addition, the first day of the forum started with meetings held between airlines and airports to seek and plan for new routes.

David Stroud, Executive Vice President, Routes comments: "This year's World Routes might well be the largest commercial aviation event ever held, and it is more than appropriate that it takes place in the Middle East, the fastest growing aviation market in the world. The event demonstrates in an impressive way how dynamic the global aviation sector is, despite the challenging economic and regulatory environment."

"The format is unique, as it is the only event which brings together hundreds of airlines and airports from all corners of the world. ?Delegates meet for tightly-scheduled face to face discussions over three days with the aim to discuss and agree on new air services. In total, around 16,000 meetings will take place in Abu Dhabi."

H.E. Ali Majed Al Mansoori, Chairman of ADAC, said: "The Middle East region has registered a 17.3% growth in passenger traffic in the first 8 months of 2012, as per the traffic report released by IATA, becoming the fastest growing region in the world. ADAC is extremely proud to host key aviation leaders from around the globe here in the heart of this dynamic region. ?This world class event will provide a platform to map out plans for growth in the aviation industry, but most importantly will allow Abu Dhabi to showcase its world-class airports and aviation services, and to work even closer with airlines in delivering new routes and destinations to Abu Dhabi airports."

"The aviation sector is one of the 12 sectors that form the Emirate's engines of economic, social and cultural growth and diversification," said Al Mansoori. ?"Our leaders' recognition that this sector is essential for connecting the Emirate to the world, has been translated to significant investment in air transport, enabling Abu Dhabi International Airport to become one of the fastest growing international airport hubs. This commitment has also allowed Abu Dhabi to establish itself as a global centre for tourism, trade and industry in the sixteen years since Abu Dhabi last hosted the World Route Development Forum."

This year's event programme has been extended to include full days on both Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th with delegates invited to "Experience Abu Dhabi", attend the World Route Development Strategy Summit and further enjoy the unique one-to-one networking, briefing, and meeting opportunities. ?Exclusive Route Exchange Airline Briefings by airlines such as Etihad, Air Canada, Southwest, Iberia, and Aeromexico will also allow airlines to brief airports directly on their requirements and various market opportunities.

This marks the first time the event has returned to a previous host city. ?Back in 1996, Abu Dhabi's downtown Hilton Hotel was the setting for the first hosted World Routes event. ?16 years later, delegates will be able to witness for themselves the immense changes that demonstrate how the city's future as a world class destination is taking shape.

2,000 Turn Out for Biden in Florida as 725 Show up for Ryan in New Hampshire

see more posts by Jason Easley

The GOP ticket?s attendance problems apparently aren?t just limited to Mitt Romney. 2,000 people turned out for Vice President Biden in Florida, while Paul Ryan spoke to a crowd of 725 in New Hampshire.

According to the AP, ?More than 2,000 people crowded into a community center to see Vice President Joe Biden talk about Medicare, the federal deficit and tax cuts for the wealthy.?

The Merrimack Patch reported on Ryan?s rally, ?A crowd of 725 supporters squeezed into the school?s field house, with at least a hundred stationed on rows of bleachers behind Ryan with a sign above reading, ?We can?t afford four more years.?

Both candidates did manage to fill their respective venues, but with the number of campaign days starting to dwindle down before Election Day, it is important to ask, what was Paul Ryan during in New Hampshire? While Joe Biden was out campaigning for Florida?s 29 Electoral College votes, Paul Ryan was in New Hampshire courting the state?s four Electoral College voters. If Romney and Ryan are serious about winning, shouldn?t they be spending their time courting voters in bigger states?

Medicare is the obvious reason why the Romney camp isn?t going to let Paul Ryan spend much time in Florida, but instead of campaigning Mitt Romney was in Pennsylvania yesterday in order to raise money to spend in states that he is more competitive in. Beyond efficient time management, the bigger problem for the Romney/Ryan ticket is that voters aren?t turning out to see them.

Paul Ryan was supposed to bring the conservative star power to the ticket, but hundreds are showing up for his events. In contrast, Joe Biden and Barack and Michelle Obama are drawing thousands to their campaign stops.

What?s even worse for the GOP is that Vice President Biden is outdrawing their presidential nominee. More people are coming out for Biden than are showing up to see Mitt Romney. It is difficult to believe that more people would show up to hear a sitting vice president than would come out for one of the two men who could be our next president, but this seems to be exactly what is happening.

Through out the entire 2012 campaign, Mitt Romney has drawn only hundreds of people to many of his campaign events. Romney couldn?t draw a crowd during the primaries, and slapping the title of presidential nominee on him hasn?t helped.

It is becoming impossible to escape the fact that not only is the Romney/Ryan campaign poorly run, but it is also generating very little enthusiasm. For a self-styled Mr. Fix It, Mitt Romney is running a terrible campaign. And if Romney can?t handle a presidential campaign, how is he going to govern the country?

While Joe Biden was outdrawing the Republican ticket on his own, another day slips by on the campaign calendar as Paul Ryan and Mitt Romney continue to tread water.

Amazon Kindle Paperwhite review

DNP Amazon Kindle Paperwhite review

If you had told us at roughly this time last year that the e-reader race would be heating up going into the 2012 holiday season, we would have disagreed. If anything, 2011 seemed like the beginning of the end. Spurred on by the tablet explosion, companies like Amazon, Barnes & Noble and even Kobo were looking toward that space for inspiration, introducing flagship devices on which reading was just one of many features. Heck, even the readers themselves started to look more tablet-like, with many abandoning of physical keyboards in favor of infrared touchscreens.

But here we are at the end of September, and this product category has never been more exciting. Back in May, Barnes & Noble captured our hearts and midnight reading marathons with the Nook Simple Touch with GlowLight, a wordy name for a great little device that made reading in bed at night a little easier. (A problem, according to Barnes & Noble, that was tearing the country's families apart.) But don't let it be said that Amazon doesn't believe in the American family. Earlier this month, the company launched the Kindle Paperwhite, the latest addition to a product lineup that has more or less become synonymous with the term "e-reader."

At that launch event, CEO Jeff Bezos described the four years of R&D that went into the front light technology powering that bright screen. It was clear from our hands-on time with the device that, although Amazon is placing extra emphasis on the Fire line these days, it still has a lot invested in the e-reader fight. The sharpened, illuminated text is impressive, and Amazon has gone so far as to describe this as the Kindle it's always wanted to build. That's all well and good, but how does it compare to similar offerings on the market? Is this worth the $119 asking price (with ads)? Let's find out.
