(AP) ? They got hitched while still in their teens, divorced 20 years and four children later, and are getting remarried after nearly a half-century apart.

For Lena Henderson and Roland Davis, both 85 years old, the second time around is finally here. The couple plans to get married again on Saturday, with four generations on hand to see it happen.

"It's every child's dream, every child who has ever been in a family where divorce has occurred, that your parents would come back together," their youngest daughter, Renita Chadwick, said Tuesday as wedding preparations were in full swing.

"We are all so ridiculously excited. We're like little children again," said Chadwick, herself a grandmother.

Henderson and Davis met as teenagers in Chattanooga, Tenn., and were married by a justice of the peace. There was no reception or honeymoon.

"Oh no," Henderson recalled with a laugh. "He went to work and I went home." Davis was a hotel bellhop at the time, about to begin a career in the military.

This time around, a church wedding is planned, at Elim Christian Fellowship Church in Buffalo, followed by a reception at an Amherst restaurant.

Still no honeymoon trip, though.

"I'm just happy that we're here," said Davis, who recently moved to suburban Buffalo from Colorado, where he was living alone following the death of his second wife in January. Henderson also was widowed after re-marrying.

Davis proposed to Henderson over the phone around Easter and she accepted, even though they hadn't seen each other since a family funeral in 1996. Before that, the two hadn't been face-to-face since splitting up in 1964, though they had stayed in touch and kept up with each other's lives through the children.

Their oldest daughter, Johnnie Mae Funderbirk, had been urging her father to return to New York since his wife's death.

Davis was receptive, especially to the idea of reconnecting with Henderson.

"I had always kind of had that in mind, mostly because of the children," he said. "You never forget someone that you cared for at one time or another."

Henderson and Davis both said it was "nice" to see one another again, this time as an engaged couple.

The children are less reserved.

"I'm as excited as some 9-year-old whose parents are getting back together," Funderbirk said, "and I'm 65 years old."

Baltimore Bankruptcy Attorney, Daniel M. Radebaugh, Helps Locals ...

(1888PressRelease) Dan Radebaugh, Esq., the managing member of Law Office of Daniel M. Radebaugh LLC, possesses expertise in various areas, including real estate, bankruptcy, corporate and civil litigation.

Baltimore, MD ? Dan Radebaugh, Esq., who has almost a decade of experience as a lawyer in the Baltimore area, is focused on ensuring that his clients understand their rights when it comes to any and all legal actions, including bankruptcy, civil litigation and notices regarding intent for foreclosure.

?One thing that I?ve found,? says Attorney Radebaugh, ?is that in an area such as bankruptcy that people are often uninformed about their rights and the fact that they have a certain amount of control when filing. Often clients first look at bankruptcy as a punishment, but soon they come to understand that it can be a road to freedom, giving them the chance to rebuild their lives.? Radebaugh notes, ?Bankruptcy is not a liquidation of rights. It can, however, lead to a liquidation of debt.?

Along with being busy in guiding people though the bankruptcy process, which involves determining if Chapter 7 or 13 is the right way to go, Radebaugh helps those who find their properties involved in the process of foreclosure. With about 1.5 million bankruptcies being filed each year and over 200,000 foreclosure notices issued each month, the attorney is very busy informing people of their rights.

?As an example,? Radebaugh says, ?when someone receives a intent for foreclosure notice from their lender that does not mean they will lose their home. They may lose it, but there is still room to negotiate. Additionally, the lender has many must conform to the law and file all paperwork properly. All of this takes time and that time can be used by the homeowner in a positive fashion.? He concludes, ?I see my job as making sure that all rights regarding home ownership are respected and not violated.?

Dan Radebaugh, Esq., serves as the managing member of Law Office of Daniel M. Radebaugh LLC, which is located in Baltimore County, Maryland. His focus includes real estate, bankruptcy, corporate and civil litigation. After graduating from the University of Baltimore School of Law in 2003 cum laude, he served as a real estate associate with the global law firm of Ballard Spahr Andrews & Ingersoll, LLP in its Baltimore office and a litigation associate with the law office of Goodell, DeVries, Leech & Dann LLP. During this time, he drafted contracts and loan documents and negotiated and settled several million dollars of real estate transactions. Miami imposes "financial urgency" in union bargaining

(Reuters) - Miami officials declared "financial urgency" in a bid to get $40 million in labor concessions from police, firefighters and other union workers, using a Florida law that allows the city to unilaterally alter union contracts, according to media reports.

The declaration in a letter by City Manager Johnny Martinez on Friday was the fourth in four years by the administration of Mayor Tomas Regalado, who has said staff costs had to be cut again because they account for nearly 80 percent of the city's $485 million operating budget for the next fiscal year.

Regalado also has recommended $20 million of other spending reductions. On Thursday, city commissioners voted to keep local property taxes unchanged.

Miami officials were not immediately available on Saturday but published news reports quoted Martinez as saying city officials expected to resume negotiations with unions for police, firefighters, sanitation crews and administrative workers within two weeks.

Regalado resists calls for increases in local property taxes and argues that austerity would encourage outside investment and migration, and leave the city of 410,000 well placed.

"We want to be partners and not adversaries; we want to be a family that works for the city of Miami," Regalado said on Thursday.

Miami officials are pushing for the concessions from the city's four government workers' unions as part of a plan to plug a $60 million gap. Pension contributions, overtime limits for firefighters and higher health insurance contributions are among the city's proposals.

Part of the budget shortfall is caused by the scheduled expiration of temporary concessions made last year by police and other unions.

Labor leaders told city commissioners on Thursday that Miami's unions had made substantial give-backs to help ease financial pressure on the city. Firefighters have said their pay has been reduced by 35 percent in recent years.

Stung especially hard by the U.S. housing collapse, Miami used Florida's financial urgency law in May 2010 to change labor terms that saved the city $80 million. Other Florida cities, like nearby Hollywood, also have used the law to force pay cuts on government workers.

On Wednesday, Moody's Investors Service put $669 million of Miami's debt on review for possible ratings cuts after federal regulators determined that city officials had misled bond investors about its finances.

Other leading ratings groups, Standard & Poor's and Fitch, said their analysts were closely watching the inquiry by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission but would take no immediate ratings actions on Miami's debt.

"While Fitch is concerned about the costs and potential operational disruptions associated with the ongoing investigation, recent financial results indicate some modest improvement in the city's overall financial position," Fitch said in written statement.

Australian, Nigerian held in Malaysia for drugs

An Australian woman and a Nigerian man have been arrested in Malaysia after drugs were discovered in the car they were driving in the capital Kuala Lumpur, police said Saturday.

Police arrested the duo after stopping their car and finding one kilogram (2.2 pounds) of methamphetamine on July 17, federal narcotics chief Noor Rashid Ibrahim said.

The two were in custody and being investigated for drug trafficking. Noor Rashid did not immediately have further details.

Drug trafficking carries a mandatory death sentence by hanging in Malaysia, where hundreds of people are on death row, mostly for drug offences.

Anyone found to be in possession of at least 50 grams of methamphetamine is considered a trafficker.

In March, Australian Dominic Jude Christopher Bird, 32, was charged with drug trafficking.

The truck driver from Perth in Western Australia was arrested March 1 in Kuala Lumpur in possession of 225 grams of methamphetamine.

(7/28). In a related post, the Economist?s ?Babbage? blog reports on new tuberculosis (TB) research presented at the conference on Monday, which ?found that a combination of one experimental drug, one drug approved for other infectious diseases and one existing TB drug had a comparable effect to standard TB treatment,? suggesting ?the combination may fight some TB strains resistant to other drugs ? and do so quite quickly? commercial outdoor power equipment - What A New Landscape ...

commercial outdoor power equipment More Details about commercial outdoor power equipment here.

A landscape maintenance business handles a variety of different tasks on properties ranging from gardening and lawn care to snow removal and debris pickup. The specific set of skills that a business offers to clients helps to establish what type of properties will be maintained. Industrious companies with many varied employees might work for a city maintaining a large park. Smaller businesses typically work for individual homeowners with small to moderately sized properties. Anyone who is considering starting a landscape maintenance business needs to acquire the skills and gear necessary in order to operate professionally.

Purchase Tools

The first step in starting a landscape maintenance business is to purchase all of the tools needed for the most common tasks. It is important to understand that some standard retail power tools are not a good investment for professionals and will break quickly if used for long hours every day. Commercial outdoor power equipment is designed to be durable and is able to handle long hours of daily use. Professional weed eaters are just one example of something that every maintenance company should have. Professional weed eaters come with a powerful motor and strong lines that remove weeds, trim grass and create edges for as long as is needed.

Practice

It is important that everyone who is going to be performing landscape maintenance knows exactly how to use the commercial outdoor power equipment that was purchased. This involves proper training for workers and testing each tool to check exactly how it works, as well as learning the limitations of each piece of equipment. Workers who do not know how to use commercial hedge trimmers might make mistakes because the operation of the specific trimmers is not fully understood. A poor understanding of the commercial outdoor power equipment that is being used will produce unprofessional results.

Learn About Lawn Care And Landscaping

Many landscape maintenance businesses do more than just trim grass and hedges. Complete lawn care and landscaping services need to be concerned about how plants grow, watering requirements and the differences between popular types of plant material that must be managed regularly. This involves learning some basic gardening techniques, the life cycle of the different types of trees and plants as well as some information about the climate and weather in the region. Some states require a pesticide applicator's license for commercial use. When used together, this knowledge will help when determining how short to cut grass, when a tree needs to be removed and how much fertilizer or other treatments that a lawn needs. Just a small amount of this type of knowledge and training will enable a landscape maintenance business to offer more services to customers.

Family | Love | Home: Garden Update

We are finally getting some real veggies from our garden and we are so excited!! The first plants that sprouted were the snap peas. For almost a month we collected a few handfuls of peas every other day or so. The kids ate them up as fast as we could pick them!

The next veggies that are going to be ready are the peppers:
And I think the cucumbers will be right behind them.

The carrots are still growing like a forest. I looked online and I read that they are ready to be picked when you can see a little orange poking up from the ground. Still nothing doing there...
I'm still on the fence with the zucchinis... The leaves are growing like crazy - really huge!

But bugs are eating all them up! Before they are big enough to pick, the tops of them get attacked by little bugs and then they turn brown and shrivel up. Help! Has this happened to you? I'd rather not use any pesticide, but I don't want to lose all those veggies...

In other garden-related news, my hubby went out and got a box for the hose so it's easier to store and looks a little neater. I guess I can take off the sticker now... :-)

Now I just need to figure out what to do about the old hook. (Don't mind the dead moss and patches of grass. We're still working on filling in all the bare spots in our yard and it's been record-breaking hot here so no point in planting any grass seed...). It's bolted in to the bricks so it's gonna be fun to take it out and then there will be two holes left.... Any ideas guys?

What's been going on in the great outdoors by you? Anyone plant a veggie garden and get to eat from it yet?

Drone-maker Parrot invests $7.5 million in two EPFL spin-offs, sets sights beyond toys

Switzerland's EPFL has managed to catch our attention with its various UAV-related activities, and it looks like it's also been the radar of Parrot, maker of the AR.Drones. EPFL announced today that the French company is investing 7.4 million Swiss Francs (or about $7.5 million) in two companies that have been spun out of the institution: senseFly and Pix4D. As you may recall, those two have collaborated in the past, with senseFly providing the camera-equipped UAVs necessary for Pix4D's 3D mapping software. Broken down, the investment works out to 2.4 million Francs put into Pix4D and five million invested in senseFly, the latter of which is enough for Parrot to claim a majority stake company. As for the future, senseFly's CEO says that the deal will give Parrot "access to the expertise and the technology for specialized drones," while Pix4D's CEO says that the investment "reinforces our position as a leader in software for professional drones" and opens up new business opportunities. It also makes it clear, if it wasn't already, that Parrot is getting pretty serious about drones. You can find the official announcement after the break, along with a video from EPFL explaining the deal.

An extended trial of a drug for people with type 2 diabetes has confirmed that the oral DPP-4 inhibitor linagliptin is a safe and effective means of lowering glucose levels for up to 102 weeks, either on its own or in combination with other selected oral anti-diabetic medication.

The 32-country study, published in the August issue of IJCP, the International Journal of Clinical Practice, followed 2,121 individuals who had taken part in four previous 24-week randomised, double-blind, placebo controlled trials, in order to monitor them for a further 78 weeks.

Those subjects who had previously received linagliptin (1,532) continued to do so and those who had received the placebo during the earlier trials (589) were also given the drug during the 78-week trial extension.

The participants who took part in the extended trial came from 231 sites in 32 countries: Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Canada, China, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, Greece, Hungary, India, Israel, Italy, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, the Philippines, Poland, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan, Thailand, Ukraine, the United Kingdom and the United States.

"Initial 24-week trials showed that linagliptin, either on its own or with other glucose-lowering agents, was effective in improving glycaemic control without weight gain or an independent increased risk of hypoglycaemia (reduced blood sugar levels)" says co-author David R Owens, Professor Emeritus, Centre for Endocrinology and Diabetes Sciences at Cardiff University, Wales, UK.

"Linagliptin works by blocking the action of DPP-4, an enzyme that destroys the hormone GLP-1, which helps the body produce more insulin when it is needed." Linagliptin was administered orally once a day in all cases, either on its own, or in combination with metformin or metformin plus a sulphonylurea or pioglitazone.

Key findings of the extended study included:

  • The study participants had an average age of 57.5 years, 75% were younger than 65 years, 51.8% were male and 52.5% had been diagnosed more than five years ago.
  • The majority had a body mass index of less than 30 kg/m2 (62.4%), a normal or mildly impaired kidney function (95.6%) and glycated hemoglobin levels of less than 8% (71.2%). The mean baseline glycated haemoglobin and fasting plasma glucose levels were significantly lower in those subjects who had received linagliptin rather than the placebo in the previous 24-week trials.
  • 1,880 people (88.6%) completed the trial. The main reasons for discontinuing were adverse side effects (3.7%), refusal to continue medication (2.6%) and lack of therapeutic effect (1.1%).
  • 1,718 subjects (81%) reported at least one adverse episodes during the extension phase. The highest incidence were in people receiving the combination of linagliptin plus metformin and a sulphonylurea (84.2%), followed by those receiving linagliptin plus metformin (81.6%). When linagliptin was taken on its own, the adverse side effects rate was lower at 78.8%, similar to those on linagliptin plus pioglitazone (76%).
  • Most adverse side effects were mild or moderate and the incidence of severe adverse side effects was low at 3.8%, with 3.4% discontinuing the drug as a result. Overall, 14.3% of participants experienced drug-related adverse incidents.
  • The investigators determined that 13.9% of participants experienced hyploglycaemic (low blood sugar) events and that about half of these (6.9%) were drug-related.
  • The highest level of drug-related hypoglycaemic events occurred in persons receiving metformin with a sulophonylurea (11%), with much lower rates for those receiving linagliptin plus metformin (2.1%), lingaliptin on its own (0.5%) and lingaliptin plus pioglitazone (0.2%).
  • Serious adverse events were reported in 9.9% of the trial subjects, with eight deaths reported during the study period. However, these were not related to the drug.
  • Long-term lingagliptin use was not associated with a clinically relevant change in body weight, with individuals previously on the drug losing an average of 0.03kg and those previously on the placebo gaining an average of 0.47 kg.

"This is the largest data set of long-term clinical evidence for linagliptin to date" concludes Professor Owens.

"Findings from the 78-week open-label extension involving 2,121 people with type 2 diabetes demonstrate sustained glycaemic control for up to 102 weeks treatment duration.

"They also provide evidence that supports the efficacy and tolerability profile seen in previously reported 24-week studies. Therefore this extension study shows that linagliptin is an effective and well tolerated therapy for the long-term management of type 2 diabetes."

New clues to the early Solar System from ancient meteorites

New clues to the early Solar System from ancient meteorites [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 22-Jul-2012

Carnegie Institution

Washington, D.C. In order to understand Earth's earliest history--its formation from Solar System material into the present-day layering of metal core and mantle, and crust--scientists look to meteorites. New research from a team including Carnegie's Doug Rumble and Liping Qin focuses on one particularly old type of meteorite called diogenites. These samples were examined using an array of techniques, including precise analysis of certain elements for important clues to some of the Solar System's earliest chemical processing. Their work is published online July 22 by Nature Geoscience.

At some point after terrestrial planets or large bodies accreted from surrounding Solar System material, they differentiate into a metallic core, asilicate mantle, and a crust. This involved a great deal of heating. The sources of this heat are the decay of short-lived radioisotopes, the energy conversion that occurs when dense metals are physically separated from lighter silicate, and the impact of large objects. Studies indicate that the Earth's and Moon's mantles may have formed more than 4.4 billion years ago, and Mars's more than 4.5 billion years ago.

Theoretically, when a planet or large body differentiates enough to form a core, certain elements including osmium, iridium, ruthenium, platinum, palladium, and rheniumknown as highly siderophile elementsare segregated into the core. But studies show that mantles of the Earth, Moon and Mars contain more of these elements than they should. Scientists have several theories about why this is the case and the research teamwhich included lead author James Day of Scripps Institution of Oceanography and Richard Walker of the University of Marylandset out to explore these theories by looking at diogenite meteorites.

Diogenites are a kind of meteorite that may have come from the asteroid Vesta, or a similar body. They represent some of the Solar System's oldest existing examples of heat-related chemical processing. What's more, Vesta or their other parent bodies were large enough to have undergone a similar degree of differentiation to Earth, thus forming a kind of scale model of a terrestrial planet.

The team examined seven diogenites from Antarctica and two that landed in the African desert. They were able to confirm that these samples came from no fewer than two parent bodies and that the crystallization of their minerals occurred about 4.6 billion years ago, only 2 million years after condensation of the oldest solids in the Solar System.

Examination of the samples determined that the highly siderophile elements present in the diogenite meteorites were present during formation of the rocks, which could only occur if late addition or 'accretion' of these elements after core formation had taken place. This timing of late accretion is earlier than previously thought, and much earlier than similar processes are thought to have occurred on Earth, Mars, or the Moon.

Remarkably, these results demonstrate that accretion, core formation, primary differentiation, and late accretion were all accomplished in just over 2 to 3 million years on some parent bodies. In the case of Earth, there followed crust formation, the development of an atmosphere, and plate tectonics, among other geologic processes, so the evidence for this early period is no longer preserved.

"This new understanding of diogenites gives us a better picture of the earliest days of our Solar System and will help us understand the Earth's birth and infancy," Rumble said. "Clearly we can now see that early events in planetary formation set the stage very quickly for protracted subsequent histories."
