Feral hogs threaten disease, business

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - It's a growing concern in the state, wild hogs rampaging New Mexico and now it has the state land commissioner worried.

The Public Land Commissioner is warning not only of the diseases these wild hogs can transmit to humans, but also how difficult it's been getting rid of them.

The sizeable swine are swarming across New Mexico, wreaking havoc on the land and reproducing rapidly.

"They're very adaptive, they're very intelligent, they have now moved to 17 of our 33 counties in New Mexico," explained State Land Commissioner Ray Powell.

Powell said they've rampaged on more than a million acres of state trust land. A veterinarian by trade, he said he's worried about the hogs.

"They can do serious damage and they could potentially drive a lot of people in agriculture out of business," said Powell.

Feral hogs carry 27-diseases that can infect wildlife and domesticated animals. Diseases, Powell said, that can be transmitted to humans, and cripple the livestock industry.

Powell said testing reveals there's almost no limit to what they'll pig out on. "They found spade toads, lizards, snakes, birds, anything that they can get a hold of they'll eat and devour," Powell said.

News 13 spoke with a USDA wildlife specialist last summer that spent most of his time tracking down hogs. "I'm continually working on pigs, all it has done through the years is intensify," said Ron Jones.

And it's only gotten worse, Powell said the hogs are originally from Siberia, and were brought in for hunting. But, they're hard to catch.

"We've had people with helicopters flying over trying to actually spot them, they've learned that the helicopters are not good news for them and they actually hide," Powell explained.

Still, he said, the daunting task of getting rid of them is necessary. "But if people don't know about it, we're not going to be able to prevent some very serious things from happening."

Powell said his office is working with game and fish, the health department, environment department, and the livestock board to try and tackle problem.

The Public Land Commissioner said a big part of the effort is trying to ensure the state land office does not have to close off lands to mining and exploration because of the hogs.

Bird flu less deadly, but more widespread, than official numbers suggest

Survey finds 1 to 2 percent infection rate in affected populations

Web edition : 3:22 pm

The deadly H5N1 avian influenza virus may not be quite so lethal after all, an analysis of more than 12,000 blood samples suggests.

Since 2003, the World Health Organization has recorded 573 cases of humans infected with bird virus. Of those, 58.6 percent have died, leading to great concern that the virus could cause a devastating pandemic if it adapts to spread easily among humans.

But many more people may have contracted the virus and fought it off with few or no symptoms, suggest Peter Palese, Taia Wang and Michael Parides of Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City. The team analyzed other researchers? data on a total of 12,677 people from seven countries where the virus has been seen and who may have been exposed to the virus.

In general, about 1 to 2 percent of the people carried antibodies against the H5N1 virus, indicating that they had been infected at some point. The rate varied from 0.6 percent to 2.1 percent using World Health Organization criteria for confirming H5N1 cases. Analysis of other studies that didn?t fit those criteria place the infection rate between 0.5 and 3.4 percent. The World Health Organization?s criteria may underestimate the infection rate and may also miss some deaths due to the virus, the researchers report online February 23 in Science.

A higher infection rate than expected isn?t good news, says Philippe Buchy of the Pasteur Institute of Cambodia in Phnom Penh. The more people infected, he says, the more chances the virus has to adapt itself so that it can be passed from person to person.

(AP) ? Roy J. Britten, a pioneering molecular biologist who discovered the crucial fact that humans and animals have multiple copies of some DNA segments, has died. He was 92.

The California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, where Britten performed research for decades, said Wednesday that Britten died of pancreatic cancer on Jan. 21 at his Costa Mesa home.

Britten discovered the repetitive DNA sequences in 1968. The sequences don't provide blueprints for genes but they are critical for animal development.

Britten and colleague Eric Davidson also helped demonstrate that gene expression ? the way certain genes are switched on ? during development plays a crucial evolutionary role, such as determining whether an animal has legs or fins. That work laid the foundation for the field of evolutionary biology.

Report: Crime at US public schools on the decline

(AP) ? Violent crime at the nation's schools is declining, and students and schools are reporting less bullying and gang activity.

But new government data reports an increase in cyber bullying and youth suicides.

"Cyber bullying issue has really moved to center stage and that's probably the next major challenge that school officials and others will have to address," said Ron Stephens, executive director of the National School Safety Center, a nonprofit advocacy organization.

He said the higher number of suicides wasn't surprising.

"I think that's a number we'll see increasing based on what's happening with all the cyber bullying," Stephens said.

The number of violent deaths declined to 33 in the 2009-10 school year, the lowest number on record since the agencies began collecting data in 1992, according to data released by the U.S. Department of Education and the Department of Justice on Wednesday. In the previous school year, there were 38 such deaths.

Thefts and nonfatal violent crimes declined from 1.2 million in 2008 to 828,000 in 2010.

"Students perceive schools as being safer than they were," said Tom Snyder, a project director of the National Center for Education Statistics

While the data show a consistent decline across several indicators, there were increases in a few areas, including cyber bullying and suicides among youth age 5 - 18 outside of school. Some school safety advocates question whether the numbers are accurate at all, noting the data is collected through surveys and not incident based reporting.

"The federal reports grossly underestimate the extent of school violence," said Ken Trump, president of the National School Safety and Security Services, a Cleveland-based consulting firm.

Veronica Joyner, president of Parents United for Better Schools in Philadelphia, said the numbers did not ring true to her.

"It's underreported," Joyner said. "Many of the administrators will not report serious incidents because it looks like they're not doing their job at the school and that is part of their evaluation."

Snyder said the report is based on seven surveys.

"We were showing fairly consistent patterns of decreases," he said.

Of the 33 violent deaths involving students, staff and others on school campuses, 25 were homicides, five were suicides and three involved a law enforcement officer. Among youth ages five to 18, there were 17 homicides and one suicide that occurred on school grounds.

The highest number of violent deaths at schools occurred in the 2006-07 school year, when there were 63.

"These tragic incidents are fortunately relatively rare, but it's hard to interpret a change from one year to another," Snyder said. "The numbers are lower but you don't know if it's part of a national pattern or just reflecting random occurrences in those years."

The annual report comes after a number of high profile incidents, including the 2010 suicide of Phoebe Prince, who hung herself after repeated bullying at a high school in South Hadley, Mass. Five students later accepted plea deals in criminal cases. Prince's death was among several that led to new laws cracking down on bullying in schools.

The total number of homicides, including those not committed on school grounds, declined from 1,701 to 1,579 among youth ages five to 18 in the 2008-09 school year. The number of suicides, however, saw an increase, from 1,231 to 1,344 in the 2008 calendar year.

And while the proportion of students ages 12 to 18 who reported being bullied at school has declined from 32 to 28 percent, more say they are being cyber bullied, an increase from 4 to 6 percent.

Trump said he was skeptical of the numbers showing an overall decrease in crime. He said that in traveling across the country and conducting school safety presentations with administrators, he asks whether they've experienced the crime decline the federal government reports.

"I have yet to have one person raise their hand," Trump said.

Joyner said her advocacy organization has noticed an increase in violent attacks on children. The Philadelphia School District recently decided to eliminate 91 school police jobs.

"You always need supervision, particularly in high schools," Joyner said. "My concern is the impact of what's going on in our schools is going to get worse."

Rocking out to hip hop in the new Myanmar

By Ploy Bunluesilp , NBC News

Ploy Bunluesilp is the NBC News Bureau Producer in Bangkok. She has reported from Myanmar five times since 2006. She was most recently on assignment in Yangon, Myanmar?s commercial capital, in early December for U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton?s meeting with pro-democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi.

YANGON, Myanmar ??A thumping rock and hip hop beat, entranced teenagers clutching beer cans, hundreds of people smiling happily ? it sure wasn't the Myanmar I am used to.

I've had plenty of memorable experiences in Myanmar, most of them unpleasant. I've been kicked out of the country by officials not once, but twice.

In 2007, when journalists were forbidden from covering the so-called "Saffron Uprising," I posed as a tourist to get into the country and played cat-and-mouse with the security forces to grab some footage when escalating political protests, initially led by monks, were crushed by the military. I watched soldiers beat cowering Burmese men and women with batons on the streets of the capital. It was an exceptionally dangerous time: a Japanese journalist was among those killed.?
?
The following year I was back again to cover the devastation caused by Cyclone Nargis.? I saw people who literally lost everything ? I remember one man who was clutching photographs of his wife and children to help officials find their corpses. Reporters were banned from the whole cyclone-hit area, so again we had to film in secret. Eventually our team was spotted, and police later tracked me down to a hotel in the capital and threw me out of the country.

?

During all of my previous trips, most people I met were terrified to talk, fearing they could be jailed just for speaking to a journalist. Even the guide who took me to the barricaded house where pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi was imprisoned begged me not to take photographs, saying it could put him in danger.

So it was wonderful to be able to move freely around Yangon during my last visit, and to find optimistic people unafraid to talk. That alone showed me how profoundly things have changed already.
?
This time I was there on Dec. 2, 2011,? the same day U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton met with Suu Kyi. I went to a huge rock concert, and I had a lot of fun.

Rocking out of a rut
Myanmar has stagnated for decades under the oppressive rule of a paranoid military dictatorship, but over the past year the country has suddenly started to make progress toward greater democracy and freedom of expression ? and more tolerance of rock and hip hop.

So I found myself at a nearly-sold-out concert at an indoor stadium in Yangon. Burmese stars belted out rock and hip hop tunes to an audience of girls in tight skirts and young men in skinny jeans, instead of the traditional sarongs usually worn in the country.

The music was full of energy, and got me moving, but there was little boisterous enthusiasm and dancing among the audience ? most stayed seated, tapping their feet and nodding their heads to the music.

They were mostly rich kids, teenagers who arrived at the stadium in expensive cars while poor children in tattered clothes collected garbage around the stadium.

?Only rich or middle class people can afford to buy a ticket as you have to spend at least 50 kyats ($7),? a Burmese friend told me. That would be cheap for a concert in most countries, but Myanmar remains mired in poverty and most people earn just a few dollars a day.

There were still plenty of reminders of the old repressive Myanmar: the atmosphere at the concert was not helped by the presence of several stern-looking armed guards.

Singing for change
Backstage the celebrity musicians were hanging out before the concert started, and I met the hip hop group ACID in their room. Their first album, also Myanmar?s first hip hop album, was the country?s best seller in 2000.? But their non-traditional style, lack of deference for authority and controversial lyrics about the hardships of life in Myanmar eventually got them in trouble.

??Our music was new to people. The government doesn?t like us because we did not follow the traditional style,? said Anegga, a 32-year-old ACID band member who goes by one name.

Two of the band's members were arrested in 2008 for allegedly illegal political activities. One of them, Zayar Thaw, 32, was dressed in shorts, a tee-shirt, a baseball cap and his arms were covered with tattoos ? not exactly the traditional Myanmar ideal of a quiet, well-behaved young man.??
?
He was released from prison in May, and told me he still has to watch his words. ?I have to be careful about saying things now, Big Brother is watching.??

But now, the band is back together and ACID is performing again. They are among more than 50 musicians and singers who have pledged their support for the election campaign of Suu Kyi, who has been released after years of house arrest and is now running for a seat in parliament.?

Suu Kyi's musical supporters are producing a special album, with songs designed to raise awareness about politics and encourage people to stand up for their rights. One of the songs contributed by ACID asks: ?How can I talk, How can I see, If you close my eyes and ears??

The musicians hope their songs can help push the boundaries and educate people in their country after 49 years of censorship and military rule.

?Everything for Aung San Suu Kyi, we love to do it for her. We love her,? said female pop singer Than That Win.

After elections in November 2010, which were widely condemned as rigged, Myanmar's ruling generals exchanged their uniforms for civilian suits ? but few expected much to change.

Then beginning in October of this year, the government introduced a series of dizzying changes: The new government led by a former general, Thein Sein, eased censorship, released political prisoners, introduced a limited right to strike and protest, and started a dialogue with the Suu Kyi.

The United States has shown its support for the political reforms ? Clinton was in town when the concert was held, to see the progress for herself.

Like many Burmese, the musicians worry that the recent changes could be a false dawn. They are optimistic, but still wary.

??This is the beginning of change in the country," Anegga told me. "We hope nobody will be arrested this time.????

Workplace Encapsulates Cancer Risk | TopNews United States

While so much is being talked about workplace safety, little is known that there are glaring concerns attached with working environment instigating as many as 5000 cancers a year. Knowing the fact that carcinogens in the workplace could make things worst in the time to come, not much is being done.

While the level of attention as far as cancers triggering from tobacco use and sun exposure is considerably high, not much research work is done to make sure that factors which are pushing the cancer incidence rate are being attended to.

"Poor awareness of exposure to occupational carcinogens and (a) lack of attribution of cancer to occupational causes... limits opportunities to reduce the likelihood and extent of exposure?, said Professor Lin Fritschi, head of the Epidemiology Group at the Western Australian Institute for Medical Research in Perth, Western Australia, who lead the study along with his team. The study was published in the Medical Journal of Australia. The author is told to have done profound work in a number of large case-control studies so that concrete improvements can be made in the manner one can examine historical exposure to chemicals.

There is need for concrete measures to be taken to underline the factors which are adding onto the reasons behind cancer. Moreover, audits and reviews must be paced up to make sure that such sensitive factor could not be overlooked.

While there are rising number of people getting affected by some or the other cancer, medical community must not ward off the risk and cater to the root cause with immediate attention. Even there is dire need to make people aware about the same as there is not much awareness spread about the same in public domain.

It is necessary that the concern shared recently is being fully attended by concerned authorities before it make things a lot difficult to manage.

Sought After Desktop Computers For Gaming ... - Diablo 3 pc game

If you?ve been in the gaming world then you would have already figured out that having one of the best desktop computers you can find is the only sure and secure way of having an edge. When talking of gaming, desktop performance is key. The disheartening thing is not that many people understand that often a game player can only be as good as his computer. If you happen to be one of the people that have always struggled due to a old processor or an overheating computer then today we?re going to recommend one or two computers to look out for.

The 1st desktop I would say is one of the best gaming rigs to have which is the Micro Express MicroFlex 79B. This machine is an excellent choice if you?re gamer who enjoys the higher end competition of today, or even the high-performance games of earlier days. This is due to the simple fact that it sports an Intel Sandy Bridge Extreme Edition procesor that produces loads of performance which in turn results in wonderful operation. The only disadvantageto this computer is that it has got a reasonably feeble power supply. Other than that it is a great gamer investment.

A second option to be cognisant of would be the Primordial Computers Satyr. This beautiful selection is made from an Intel i7 processing unit, eight high power 3.0 USB ports, a twin GPU Nvidia DeForce GTX590 video card, a 480GB solid state hard drive and to top it off heaps of room for upgrades. I know you think this sounds too good to be true so grab it while its still discounted because this wonderful piece of technology is still fairly cheap yet guarantees glorious performance. It?s also good for persons who like to tinker with their systems so that you can simply upgrade to your hearts desire.

Next on the list we have got the AVA Direct X79 Silent Gaming PC. Now this machine is for game players who take pride in their computers asthetics as well as operation. The Direct X79 comes in futuristic box like case that screams elegance joined with a six-core Intel i7-3930K, 16GB worth of memory. Best of all this is a virtually silent computer. For most it sounds like its too good to be true, right? Gamers get this amazing silent gaming personal computer with its quick dynamic hardware with its only downfall being its somewhat high price.

So if you are the market for a gaming PC these are but a few choice desktop models which have been earmarked at some point to be among the ideal gaming rigs. When it comes to gaming, the computer you utilize matters and as such it pays to invest in one of the best desktop computers on the market. When you?re looking at other options just be sure to keep a tight watch on the processing unit, memory and video card. If you match it against the prerequisites of your favored games you generally will stay competitive for some years. If you aren?t extraordinarily knowledgeable on the technology side of things it?s never a bad idea to pose questions on online blogs and frequently read the desktop overviews posted on the web. Until next time I wish you farewell and happy hunting.

Mark has owned Khandiis Computers Incorporated for 5 years and has made a name of producing some of the best desktop computer deals on the internet. You can find nice buys on highly regarded computers as well as locate great tips on cheap desktop computer systems for interactive gaming competition when you are privy on where to look.

Mardi Gras Museum goes up on auction block

Mardi Gras season has begun, but?memorabilia?collectors and Fat Tuesday fans had to say?farewell?to the Mardi Gras Museum. ?The museum will be auctioning its collection.

Designed as a celebration of?Mardi?Gras?when it opened in 1992, a museum in the New Orleans suburb of Kenner has closed and its stock of memorabilia will go on the auction block.

The?Mardi?Gras?Museum suffered from a drop in attendance, and its city-sponsor, like many communities around the country, has been forced to tighten its budget. Bidders will have the chance to acquire costumes, classic invitations to exclusive balls and other items associated with Louisiana's famous festival.

Auctioneer Bradley Mutz will handle the March 8 bidding and expects buyers generally will get the stuff at bargain prices. But the president of the?Mardi?Gras?Memorabilia Society who appraised the holdings said some are rare or one-of-a-kind and will draw higher interest from?Mardi?Gras?collectors.

RELATED: Mardi Gras food that will get you salivating

"The most striking to me, being a collector myself, were two Rex queen scrolls," Herbie LeBlanc said.

The scrolls are given to the queen of Rex, one of the signature parading groups of?Mardi?Gras. They announce the selection of make-believe monarchs, drawn from social circles, to "rule" over lavish balls and parades during the Carnival season.

"In close to 25 years collecting I have never seen one available to buy before," LeBlanc said.

Among the items expected to draw the highest bids are the elaborate costumes, including one from 1987 worn by the king of the Krewe of Poseidon, a framed 1893 invitation to the Rex ball, a Rex card holder ? which would have been given by a Rex member to his escort at the ball ? from about 1900.

Kenner officials have tried to contact donors of some of the items to determine whether they wanted them returned before the auction. Among the items being reclaimed is a 1974 Gremlin automobile, completely covered with?Mardi?Gras?beads, said deputy city attorney Leigh Roussel.

Mutz, whose family has been in the auction business for generations, said he's impressed with the quality of the items up for auction, but he doubts the sale will yield a financial bonanza.

"I'm not seeing a whole bunch of money here," Mutz said. "I don't see anything that I'd expect to go over $1,000."

Whatever is raised will go to the Kenner general fund.

"It's sad to see it go," Roussel said. "It was very successful when it first opened, but it no longer has the patronage and support and Kenner is not in a position to keep offering support."

Fit for a King: On the Future of Food | Rodale.com Voices

?by Leslie Hatfield, GRACE communications

Advocates of locally sourced, sustainably produced food are often portrayed as elitists (most often by those with a vested interest in the agricultural status quo) and granted, it doesn?t get much more elite than His Royal Highness Prince Charles, The Prince of Wales.

Last May, just a day after his son William?s eagerly anticipated marriage to Kate Middleton, Prince Charles flew to Washington D.C. to give a speech at the Future of Food Conference, in which he outlined the social and environmental problems associated with industrial food systems and some pragmatic solutions to them.? Author and environmentalist Laurie David was in the audience that day and like many others (including Ecocentric bloggers Chris and Kai), was deeply impressed. Laurie immediately set out to convince the Prince ? and Rodale Press ? that an essay adaptation of the speech would make a great small book.

Today, that little book is out in print and called The Prince?s Speech: On the Future of Food, with a foreword by poet and farmer Wendell Berry, and an afterword co-written by urban farmer/MacArthur genius Will Allen and longtime food journalist Eric Schlosser. (Disclosure: GRACE was a sponsor of the Future of Food conference and is working to promote the book, primarily through the creation of this website.)

Why would you care what a prince from the UK has to say about the future of food in the US?

First off, Prince Charles knows what he?s talking about. He has been farming ? yes, farming ? sustainably and touting the benefits of organic agriculture for decades. A friend of mine who was invited to a private tour of his Highgrove farm told me that when she shook his hand, it was calloused, and she insists without a smidgen of cynicism that she is sure he really spends three days each week working the land.

Second, his message makes sense. He observes something not often addressed by industrial solutions to problems like yield or water scarcity: that agriculture does not exist in a vacuum. He points out the interrelated nature of food, water, energy and global economics, and that local production is systemically more resilient than its centralized counterpart.

This all depends upon us deepening our understanding of the relationship between food, energy, water, and economic security, and then creating policies which reward producers who base their farming systems on these principles. Simply because, if we do not consider the whole picture and take steps with the health of the whole system in mind, not only will we suffer from rising food prices, we will also see the overall resilience of our economies and, in some instances, our ecological and social systems too, becoming dangerously unstable.

?.Imagine if there were a global food shortage; if it became much harder to import food in today?s quantities, where would countries turn to for their staple foods? Is there not more resilience in a system where the necessary staple foods are produced locally, so that if there are shocks to the system, there won?t be panic? And what is more, not only can it be much more productive than it currently is, strengthening small farm production could be a major force in preserving the traditional knowledge and biodiversity that we lose at our peril.

Prince Charles does not oversimplify the problems (including but not limited to overuse of water and energy; pollution of water, soil and air; and unjust labor conditions) created by our current methods of food production, or the solutions he puts forth ? instead, he acknowledges the complexity of feeding a rapidly growing global population. He recognizes the complex nature of the Earth herself and does not, like so many proponents of ?solutions? like transgenic seeds, seek to tame her wilderness, but rather holds a reverence for biodiversity and an interest in preserving all manner of plants and microorganisms, and working with them to create healthy, thriving agricultural systems. He draws on the wisdom of the IAASTD report, published in 2008 by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation ? with 400 contributing agricultural scientists from 57 different countries ? the gist of which was that developing nations know how to feed themselves and don?t need genetically engineered seeds, but instead need infrastructure and access to local markets. He points out that if one billion people around the globe are hungry, so too are one billion obese and another billion suffering from ?hidden hunger,? or malnutrition, and that all three of these are symptoms of an unhealthy system.

Finally, the Prince makes his bravest statement, a call for a ?more honest form of accounting.?

Nobody wants food prices to go up, but if it is the case that the present low price of intensively produced food in developed countries is actually an illusion, only made possible by transferring the costs of cleaning up pollution or dealing with human health problems onto other agencies, then could correcting these anomalies result in a more beneficial arena where nobody is actually worse off in net terms? It would simply be a more honest form of accounting that may make it more desirable for producers to operate more sustainably ? particularly if subsidies were redirected to benefit sustainable systems of production. It is a question worth considering, and I only ask it because my concern is simply that we seek to produce the healthiest food possible from the healthiest environment possible ? for the long term ? and to ensure that it is affordable for ordinary consumers.?

This more honest form of accounting would include what economists refer to as externalities, which are costs (or benefits) incurred in the production of a material ? in this case, food ? that are borne by someone outside the transaction between buyer and seller. Our current system relies on society to pay for the negative externalities (environmental cleanup, public health costs and more), while Big Food pads its profit margins by not being made to pay for the messes it creates. Conversely, local and sustainable agriculture is not only more ?honest? and fair, but in fact creates positive externalities like stronger local economies and eaters who have reconnected to traditional food knowledge, the places they live and even each other (farmers? market patrons have been found to have four times as many conversations there than visitors to the average supermarket).

It?s worth pointing out that it?s not in the Prince?s interest to go around sounding off on the perils of the industrial food system. Sure, he?s in a better position than some ? as Wendell Berry points out, he is no ?mere citizen.? And he?s not a politician, so he?s not beholden to Big Food?s contributions for his next election campaign. However, his position ensures that he will be in the public eye throughout his entire lifetime, so upsetting the proverbial apple cart has lasting implications for him. And though he doesn?t expound, His Royal Highness hints at the dangers of speaking out on food issues, and his honorable reason for doing so.

Questioning the conventional worldview is risky business. And the only reason I have done so is for the sake of the younger generation and for the integrity of Nature herself. It is your future that concerns me and that of your grandchildren, and theirs too.

In his foreword, Wendell Berry calls Prince Charles the only eminent person with ?both the clarity to see and the courage to speak candidly about the obvious failures and dangers of industrial agriculture.? Eminent though he may be, speaking honestly and acting for the good of society as a whole by preventing wealthy and powerful agribusiness interests from compromising public health and environmental quality to earn profits seems to me to be the opposite of elitist.

If advocating for cleaner, more just food systems and supporting small scale farmers and local economies through the purchase and enjoyment of locally grown, sustainably produced food makes me an elitist, then let them eat (organic) cake.

Column: Lot to love about Linsanity (AP)

The night before, Kobe Bryant had laughed off a question about whether he would be called on to defend Jeremy Lin in New York. He had no idea what kind of game Lin played, and didn't understand the fuss about a player he could barely remember even playing against.

Now he knows. Linsanity waits for no one.

"A great story," Bryant said. "It's a testament to perseverance and hard work. A good example for kids everywhere."

That it is. There's a lot to be learned from Lin's remarkable journey from nowhere to instant stardom at Madison Square Garden, where fans were so giddy Friday night that many were watching the game through masks bearing Lin's likeness.

Not a bad example for NBA superstars, either. There's something they can learn about the way Lin is handling his sudden turn in the often harsh glare of the New York media spotlight.

LeBron James said he wanted to be more humble this year? Take a cue from Lin, who deflects any praise about his play by either giving credit to his teammates or to God.

Bryant wants his less talented teammates to be more involved on the court? Look at what Lin has done in less than four full games to mold a ragtag group of wannabes and cast-offs into a team that believes in itself in the space of just a week.

"We are a team," Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni said. "His personality has rubbed off on the guys."

If, by some odd chance, you don't know Lin's story by now, here's the condensed version: Harvard graduate. First American-born NBA player of Chinese or Taiwanese descent. Cut by two other teams.

And, until last Saturday when he came off the bench in New York to score 25 points, a fourth-string point guard so afraid of not getting a real contract for the season that he was sleeping on his brother's couch.

A classic American underdog story with a few twists. A feel-good story that flies in the face of everything we might think we know about NBA basketball.

We don't love Lin because he was able to carve his way through and around Bryant and the rest of the Lakers on his way to a career-high 38 points to keep him undefeated as the Knicks' starting point guard. We don't love him because he can both drive the lane to score and hit his teammates with expert passes when his route is blocked.

Kobe can do the same things, and so can LeBron. We respect their skills, talk about their greatness, but there's no real attachment unless we happen to be a fan of their teams.

It's different with Lin.

We love him because he's every person who ever dreamed of greatness. We love him because he's overcome adversity, and fought past ethnic stereotypes. We love him because he insists he's not all that smart despite a high school GPA of 4.2 and the Harvard degree.

And, yes, we love him because he sleeps on his brother's couch.

It may not last. Nothing ever does, and it's been only a week since Lin exploded into the public consciousness. Teams will figure out ways to defend him, just as they did with Tim Tebow when he went on his own remarkable run. He may not be able to spread the ball as much when Carmelo Anthony comes back from injury and wants it himself.

And there's always that chance ? as much as newly enthused Knicks fans hate to contemplate it ? that the whole week was an adrenaline-fueled aberration and that Lin is closer to the fourth-string point guards most NBA personnel types thought he was than the superstar in the making New Yorkers hope he is.

Whatever. He's already probably saved D'Antoni his job, and workers in some factory somewhere are making a lot of overtime pay stitching together the No. 17 replica jerseys that were nowhere to be found Friday night at the Garden.

He could also make the Knicks a lot more money than the $788,872 he's due this season if he becomes so must-see TV that Time Warner Cable acquiesces to demands and restores the team's game to the 2 million New Yorkers who have been without it because of a money dispute with the MSG Network.

He's made believers of players who didn't have much to believe in before, made believers of fans who were desperate for someone to believe in.

"He has inspired us to play harder because he gives it his all every day," Knicks forward Jared Jeffries said. "There is nothing he doesn't do on a daily basis."

Indeed, about the only bad thing anyone can say about Lin is that there are way too many bad puns associated with his name.

A small price to pay, though, as Linsanity sweeps the nation.

Obama's Contraception Rule A Matter Of Life-Altering Care For Some

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The debate over President Barack Obama's new contraception-coverage rule has been largely been considered through the frame of religious liberties, federal authorities and electoral consequences.

For Kimberly Dudley, however, there is a significant, often delicate, medical component being lost in the discussion.

Dudley is one of approximately five million women who suffer from Polycystic Ovary Syndrome or PCOS, a complex disorder that is a major cause of female subfertility. The condition affected her mother and her six aunts, all of whom were forced to have hysterectomies before the age of 35.

Dudley, now 35 herself, is threatened with a similar outcome. A hormonal imbalance makes it difficult if not impossible for her body to have normal menstrual cycles. Periods can last weeks if not months. Her most recent one started on October 3, 2011. It ended three weeks ago.

"It almost killed me," she said, "the doctors couldn't stop the bleeding." They tried a number of medications before finding one that worked: a double-dosage of Aygestin, a drug that can be classified as a birth control.

"Had the last one not worked I would have likely had a hysterectomy," she said.

The Obama administration's rule change would force hospitals and schools owned and run by the Catholic Church and other religious organizations to offer health care plans to their employees that cover drugs like Aygestin. There is a year grace period before it becomes law and reports early Friday morning suggest that the administration will alter the language to allow religious groups more leeway in (and distance from) providing such coverage. Even when the new rule takes effect, Dudley won't be directly affected. A self-employed real estate broker, she pays $55 every month for her medication. Her insurance company covers the rest.

But that doesn't mean she doesn't have a deeply personal stake in the game. Her husband is a dean at a local North Carolina college. Were he to get a job offer at a Catholic university in one of the states that don't require those institutions to cover the co-pays of their employee's contraception, with her then being dependent on his plan, they'd be unlikely to move. "It would be sad he would have to make job choices based on something like this," she said.

Dudley brings to the debate a perspective that has been largely absent from public view. When the White House initially weighed the merits of changing federal policy on contraceptives, a cadre of largely female advisers invested in expanding health care coverage for women were pitted against mainly male aides, including several prominent Catholics, who warned that it would cause a political firestorm. Since the former won out, the president has come under intense pressure to reverse course.

Members of the Catholic Church, reportedly prepping for months for the battle, have been vocal with their concerns that the rule forces them to violate tenets of faith. Republicans and even some Democrats have warned that the policy represents a dangerous overreach by the federal government. It has been less common to hear from those whose lives (and not just their sex lives) are directly affected by current law.

"I'm a married woman," Dudley said. "I am a Christian. I don't believe in abortion. But this has nothing to do with any of that. This is a health issue for me and for millions of women."

The Guttmacher Institute estimates that roughly 14 percent of birth control prescriptions are written for non-contraceptive purposes, helping some 1.5 million women with issues like ovarian cancer, ovarian cysts, endometriosis, and endometrial cancer. Their stories, filled with difficult details of medical trauma and personal sacrifice, aren't usually the fodder for piqued political conversation, at least not until this week.

Dudley, for her part, kept the details of her condition secret from all but close friends and family. She only came forward on Thursday morning, when she sent an email to a wider group after finally hitting a boiling point with news coverage of the controversy. She forwarded that email to The Huffington Post shortly after.

Her first inclination that something might be wrong came when she was 18 years old. She went to the campus nurse at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, who recommended that she see an off-campus doctor. An ultrasound was conducted confirming PCOS. Her life since has been filled with efforts to manage the consequences. She shyly changes topic when people ask why she doesn't have more children (she and her husband have a nine year old.) She misses big events and birthday parties, including her best friend's 40th.

"When you are bleeding that high a volume there are times where you have to wear adult diapers," she says, by way of explaining why she's occasionally housebound.

Even more serious has been the medical complications. One recent large loss of blood resulted in severe iron deficiency and anemia. Things stabilized eventually. But Dudley said her doctor later told her that the doctor had thought she was going to die.

Finding the right medication has changed her life, she says. And she counts herself among the fortunate for having the resources to cover the costs. But she also recognizes how close she comes to being among the cast of the less lucky.

The Church may be sincere in arguing that Obama's new rule violates their consciousness. Lawmakers may be earnest in expressing concerns about the reach of government into world of contraception policy. But that doesn't change the fact that many women suffering from Dudley's condition, as she notes, "do not have access to health insurance coverage to pay for this medication simply because they work at places owned or run by the Catholic Church."
