5 Steps For Product- Launch Success

planning for launch successYou know what happens as the year starts drawing to a close.

Everyone starts reflecting on their life in a really general way and sort of haphazardly coming up with resolutions for the new year. . .resolutions that they rarely follow through on.

As the Systems Chick, I?m here to help you overcome overwhelm by zooming in on a particular area of your business and creating an exciting action plan that?ll rocket you to success in 2013.

We?re zeroing in on launching because it?s an issue that?s near and dear to my heart.

Launching my very first info-product was one of my biggest accomplishments in 2012.? The e-course into which I poured so much of my expertise and created with love got overwhelmingly great reviews.

My big mistake?? Not planning my launch properly.

The launch left me feeling burned out and disappointed because I didn?t meet my goal in terms of filling the course with the ideal number of participants.

Now, I?m committed to turning things around and want to share with you what I learned so that you don?t have to make the same mistakes!

Myth #1:? Planning forces us into a box, limits our freedom to go with the flow, and constrains true creativity.

Fact:? Plans can be incredibly liberating. . .if you approach them in the right way.? Think of them as guidelines rather than cages.? They eliminate all that time wasted on the unnecessary guesswork, which prevents you from dedicating your energies to your most important creative work.? Plus, when you?re in the heat of creation, a flexible plan will prevent you from being overwhelmed by all the things you need to accomplish to bring your work to completion.

Myth #2:? Planning is yet another overwhelming thing on my to-do list.?

Fact:? The big dreams for your business often include doing things you?ve never done before, which means you don?t have a clear sense of the actions you need to take.? It doesn?t mean that you can?t plan it! ?Sometimes this is the very best time to invest in a few sessions with a launch specialist who can help you break everything down into a doable plan that you?re excited to implement.

Myth #3:? Advance planning is impossible given the ever-changing nature of the online environment.

Fact:? Doing business in today?s world resembles competitive surfing rather than recreational sailing.? What we need to do is master a few skills or programs and plan to open ourselves up to relevant innovations.? You don?t have to stay on top of?or follow?every new trend! ?Mapping out your flexible plan won?t pre-define every step, but it will help you keep focused as you navigate our changing world.

5 EASY STEPS FOR PLANNING YOUR LAUNCH

1. ? ? ? ? Create a goal for each quarter.

Write down 3 MAJOR products or services you want to launch in the next 12 months.

You might want to spread them out throughout the year, so you can give each one your full attention.

?

EXAMPLE:? I want to create and launch a new mini e-course in April 2013.

?

2.????? Specify a single area of focus for every month.

This area must be directly related to achieving your ultimate goal for each quarter, but this laser focus doesn?t mean you won?t be doing anything else during this time.? You need a core focus so you don?t get overwhelmed or burned out.

?

EXAMPLES:? In January, I?m going to focus on creating content.? Then, in February, I?ll zoom in on production, and in March, it?s all about promotion.

?

Doesn?t your project feel much more manageable when you approach it this way?

?

3.????? Break each of the focus areas down into tasks.

Create a list of things that need to happen for each part of the project.?? At this point, you don?t need to squeeze it all into the one month to which you assigned it.

?

EXAMPLE:? Creating my content requires defining the main idea. I also need to decide on the basic format (e.g., downloadable PDF, content on individual web pages, a podcast series or video case studies?).? During production, I?ll deal with all these formatting details.? I?ll discuss these decisions with my editor, create an outline, generate the first draft, send it to my editor for feedback, and finalize the draft.

?

The project is starting to take shape, isn?t it?

?

4.????? Assign dates for the tasks.

Now it?s time to put these actions on your calendar.? Working backwards from your ultimate goal is a great way to plan.? Once you?ve mapped things out, share your deadlines with everyone involved in the project.? Confirm that they?re available during the necessary times and make sure they mark things down on their calendars to further ensure your project is going to happen according to schedule.

?

EXAMPLE:? To start production in February, my content has to be ready by February 3rd, which means I?ve got to send the final draft to my editor no later than January 25th.? That means my first draft has to be done by January 15th.? As such, the outline needs to be discussed with my editor by the 8th.? Therefore, I need to set aside a few hours on January 3rd to define the main idea and decide on the format.? By this Friday, I?ll email my editor to make sure these deadlines work for her.

If you?re a visual person like me, working with a wall calendar will make the planning much easier.? This way you can see your entire year at a glance and play with the dates, especially, if other team members ask you to revisit certain dates because of their other commitments.

?

5.?????? Define weekly milestones

Now all you have to do is record these weekly goals in your calendar and block off specific times to make them happen.

Life will happen and so will crisis situations.

But you?ve got to treat the time you need for your own projects as sacred as the time you work on your projects for your clients.

?

Planning in advance will allow you to see your availability and schedule your client work and administrative tasks around the work that needs to happen for you to reach your weekly milestones.

Break down those chunks even further, so that they become manageable:

?

EXAMPLE:? Between January 8th and 15th, I need to create the first draft.? I?ve got 5 working days, but let?s leave 1 day out in case I need to take care of a crisis situation.? That leaves me with 4 days.? On those days, I?ll block out 1 ? hours every day and will work on the draft first thing in the morning. . .before checking my email.

?

Voila!? You have a plan!!!?? Revisit it regularly.? Stick to it.? Make it happen.

Yes, keeping promises to yourself will be extremely difficult.? Don?t be hard on yourself?it?s difficult for EVERYONE.

Find an accountability partner and subscribe to iDoneThis.? Those two will keep you on track like a charm.

?

Your Challenge.

Find a quiet place and set your quarterly goals and monthly focus areas for 2013.
In the comments below, let me know what you will be working on next year.

Remember, it all starts with a declaration.? ?In 2013 I will ??

Do it now.

Clinton suffered clot between brain and skull, doctors say

During an oddly jokey statement at the White House as the fiscal deadline bore down Monday afternoon, President Obama said, "I'm going to be president for the next four years. I?hope." He was warning Republicans that, yes, they'd have to deal with him for a while. But it was, to be sure, a strange moment. Could he actually have been joking about assassination? About impeachment? The?apocalypse? Or has everyone just had enough of these negotiations??

What to Watch in 2013 Politics

We had no time to catch our breath after the November election before plunging into imbroglios over Cabinet appointments and the fiscal cliff.?But the chances of 2013 offering even a brief respite from politics are as unlikely as the National Rifle Association?s Wayne LaPierre ringing in the New Year with New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg. Pass the eggnog quick!

With the 24/7 news cycle came the 365-day-a-year campaign, and it?s only getting worse. Fundraising invitations for candidates up for re-election in 2014 were going out before the 2012 election.

Nothing compares to the drama of a presidential race or the impact of the mid-terms, but pay attention starting now because this year will set the stage for 2014 and 2016. How much longer will President Obama bask in the glow of his re-election before the inevitable sputter in the polls? Will the Republican Party get serious about improving its image and outreach to an increasingly diverse electorate? And will Mitt Romney...oh, never mind, who cares?

Those are just a few of the questions on minds cluttered with marginal tax rates and charitable deductions. Here are some of the top political events we are looking forward to in 2013:

1. Debates over immigration reform and gun control. After a first term consumed with ending wars and avoiding economic collapse, President Obama has promised to turn his attention to social concerns. The group led by Vice President Joe Biden faces a January deadline to come up with proposals to stop gun violence in the wake of the shooting deaths of 20 children and six adults at a Connecticut elementary school. Activists on both sides of the immigration debate are gearing up for what could be an epic battle over how to treat the 11 million illegal immigrants in this country.

2. Governor?s races in New Jersey and Virginia. With the news that Newark Mayor Cory Booker will not challenge Republican Gov. Chris Christie, the Democratic Party is scrambling. Christie, whose popularity is soaring as he oversees the recovery from ?superstorm? Sandy, has already said he?ll be ?much more than ready? for a White House bid in 2016. Virginia fascinates because it?s emerged as one of the most important battleground states in the country. In 2008, President Obama turned the state blue for the first time since 1964. Gov. Bob McDonnell?s victory the following year paved the way for the Republican rout in 2010, but the GOP couldn?t overcome Obama?s well-laid groundwork in 2012. We also won?t be able to take our eyes off Virginia because of the colorful, front-running characters: Republican Ken Cuccinelli, the attorney general whose idea of a great day is shutting down an abortion clinic and stabbing a knife into the heart of Obamacare, and Democrat Terry McAuliffe, the brash former national party chairman and consummate political hack.

3. Special Senate elections in Massachusetts.Obama?s appointment of Sen. John Kerry to replace Clinton as Secretary of State is expected to clear the Senate, opening up the seat he has held since a collection of celebrities recorded ?We Are the World? in 1985. Republican Sen. Scott Brown, recently ousted by Democrat Elizabeth Warren, has a good shot at getting his job back.

4. Mayor?s races in New York City and Los Angeles. Both of these cities boast larger-than-life mayors whose political careers are destined to continue after they leave city hall. ?Bloomberg, the Democrat-turned-Republican-turned independent billionaire, whose dislikes include big guns and Big Gulps, is winding up his third term. Four candidates are competing to replace Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, a rising star in the Democratic Party who chaired the 2012 nominating convention.

So enjoy the champagne but don?t overdo it. Twitter is no fun with a hangover.

Woody Roseland: Young Adult Cancer: Year in Review

Deep in the South Platte River basin rests an oasis of thin air, and sharp-passing quarterbacks. It's only 2:30 in the afternoon but the mid-December shadows are already long, pronounced and stretched across the Denver cityscape. Although the darkest day, the winter solstice has just passed, until recent days it's been an unseasonably warm month, almost alarmingly so, in the Mile High City. Sixty degrees one day, 63 the next, 54 the next. Sitting in a generic hotel coffee shop, not so different from the one you might find yourself in on a lazy Sunday afternoon, is where I find myself. Swirling in my system is a fresh dose of chemotherapy designed to keep my pesky tumor in check, a plethora of prescription drugs designed to counteract the side effects of the drugs designed to save my life, and of course a passion fruit Arnold Palmer.

Whenever the end of the year approaches I like to reflect on the previous year and look forward to the year approaching. What did I like, what didn't I like? What needs to change, what needs to stay the same? And seeing as I'm temporarily (or possibly permanently -- call me, Arianna) writing on the Huffington Post about young adults with cancer, let's examine the state of young adults with cancer.

America as a whole 'seems' to have a pretty solid social consciousness and responsibility towards cancer -- as evident by October and its nauseating dedication (read: marketing) to curing breast cancer (read: selling pink things in the hope of appealing to women). Although there seems to be a lot of going on for breast cancer, things aren't as cut and clear for the rest of the cancer world in America, especially for the young adult cancer community.

A couple of the biggest problems facing the young adult world:

Lack of Health Insurance

No group is as underinsured as young adults. With 23.4 percent of young adults age 18-25 without insurance (a number that is down around 5 percent since Obamacare went into effect) that means that more than seven million 18-to-25-year-olds don't have insurance right now! Going through the post-college, pre-career transition time, many young adults find themselves left without health insurance (and possibly working as a barista). The out of the ordinary ache or pain that would usually land them in the doctor's office instead leads them to self-diagnoses on WebMD, or the always effective and popular anti-cancer treatment: denial!

"I'm sure it's nothing, if it continues to get worse I'll get it checked out" is the sentiment often muttered to concerned friends when what they really mean is "There's no way in hell I can afford a $400 doctor's appointment when it might not be that bad." So instead of catching the cancer early it goes undiagnosed for far too long. This, among other things, leads to a very unimpressive survival rate for young adults.

Fertility

Alarmingly enough, when you throw an almost lethal amount of drugs into someone with the sole purpose of destruction, it leaves your downstairs parts a bit flustered. When I was first diagnosed at 16, the last thing on my mind was my future children.

Many young adults find themselves in similar situations when they're first diagnosed. Overnight you're expected to know an entire field of medicine and the choices you make at this juncture can have lasting and permanent effects. No pressure, right? Fertility issues are often the first to slip through the cracks (right after Chinese or Mexican for dinner). Men who've had cancer are 23 percent less likely to father a child. The best way to combat these alarmningly high numbers is to raise awareness. Perhaps the fact that it's an awkward topic leads to these numbers. But don't be afraid to have that awkward conversation with your pal.

Research and Survival Rates

If you look at the money over the years that have been poured into breast cancer, colon cancer, and leukemia, it's no wonder why the survival rates have skyrocketed for many adult cancers. The average adult cancer patient has a 10-year survival rate of 45.2 percent, which is up substantially from 23.7 percent in the 1970s. It's painfully obvious when you see the dearth of research dollars spent towards young adult cancers why the survival rates have barely changed in the past 30 years. Of the 20 types of cancers that affect young adults, only eight have improved since 1985. This is a trend which unfortunately has seeped into the pediatric cancer world as well, the nation's largest cancer organization the American Cancer Society only directs 1 percent of funding to pediatric cancer research. There aren't enough people advocating and voting for the research dollars to be spent here -- and that's where the problem lies.

The current situation of the young adult cancer world may look grim, but let's take a look at the glass half full. With the continued implementation of Obamacare, we should see fewer young adults without health insurance, which may boost the survival rate. With more young adults surviving cancer, that means more will give back and raise awareness as well as money for cancer research. There are more and more charities being formed that are dedicated to advocating for young adults.

Americans have shown that they're willing to give to cancer as long as it's marketed right. There are a lot of opportunities for 2013 in the young adult cancer world. It's time for us all to get involved in them. If I've learned anything about charity events there are always free T-shirts and cute 20-somethings with a nice social conscious on them.

So run that 5k, buy the overpriced wine bundle at the silent auction, and grow that mustache.

Young adult cancer's not gonna cure itself.

Happy New Year.

First meteor shower of 2013 peaks this week

The first meteor shower of 2013 will kick off the year's night sky events this week, giving stargazers a chance to ring in the New Year with a celestial fireworks display.

The Quadrantid meteor shower is an annual meteor shower every January. While this year's "shooting star" show is not expected to outshine some of the more spectacular meteor showers of 2012, it may give stargazers with clear, dark skies a great start to the New Year.

"Those who brave the cold might see up to 40 meteors per hour, although moonlight will make faint meteors harder to spot," officials with the Hubble Space Telescope explained in a January skywatching video guide.

The waning gibbous moon will be out in full force during the shower's peak, but skywatchers in dark areas of the Northern Hemisphere during the wee hours of Thursday morning might still get a decent show.

Scientists suspect that the meteors of the Quadrantids are debris from the asteroid 2003 EH1 ? the same source of the Geminid meteor shower every December. The asteroid itself may be a chunk from a shattered comet that broke into pieces several hundred years ago, NASA officials said in a statement.

The Quadrantid meteor shower occurs when the Earth passes through a stream of debris from the comet. The fragments slam into the atmosphere at 90,000 mph (144,841 kph) and burn up 50 miles (80.5 km) above the planet in a dazzling display.

The meteor shower is named for the outdated Quadrans constellation, which is no longer recognized by astronomers, NASA officials said.

"Located between the constellations Bootes and Draco, Quadrans represents an early astronomical instrument used to observe and plot stars," they added.

However, the constellation was still relevant in 1825, when the meteor shower was first documented by astronomers.

Psychiatric test for suspect in NYC subway death

NEW YORK (AP) ? A 31-year-old woman accused of shoving a man to his death in front of a subway train because she believed he was Muslim laughed and smiled during a court hearing where she was ordered to undergo a psychiatric evaluation.

Erika Menendez, 31, was charged Saturday night with murder as a hate crime after she told police she spontaneously pushed Sunando Sen, according to prosecutors.

"There is no reason. I just pushed him in front of the train because I thought it would be cool," she said, according to the Queens district attorney's office.

She laughed so hard during her arraignment in Queens criminal court that Judge Gia Morris told her lawyer: "You're going to have to have your client stop laughing."

Defense attorney Dietrich Epperson said Menendez's behavior in court was no different from how she had been acting when he spoke to her privately, and said his client didn't really think the proceedings were funny. He represented her for the arraignment only and had no further comment. Menendez was held without bail and ordered to have a mental health exam.

Prosecutors said she pushed the 46-year-old India native to his death because she blamed "Muslims, Hindus and Egyptians" for the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

"I pushed a Muslim off the train tracks because I hate Hindus and Muslims ? ever since 2001 when they put down the twin towers I've been beating them up," Menendez told police, according to the district attorney's office.

Friends and co-workers said Sen, a native of Calcutta, was Hindu. He had lived in Queens for decades and was a graphic designer and copy shop owner. Sen was standing on an elevated platform of the 7 train that travels between Manhattan and Queens when he was shoved from behind as the train entered the station.

Witnesses told police a woman had been mumbling to herself and was sitting on a bench behind Sen until the train pulled in, then shoved him from behind. She then fled.

Police released a sketch and surveillance footage of a woman running from the subway station. Menendez was arrested after a passer-by saw her on the street and thought she looked like the wanted suspect. Witnesses identified her in a lineup and she was questioned by police, when she implicated herself, according to police and prosecutors.

Angel Luis Santiago, who used to work at the Queens building where Menendez's mother and stepfather live, said he was shocked by her arrest.

"It surprised me what she did," he said. "She never acted that way."

Menendez's next court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 14.

Sen was the second man to die after being pushed in front of a New York City subway train this month. Ki-Suck Han was killed in a midtown Manhattan subway station on Dec. 3. A homeless man was arrested and charged with murder in that case and is awaiting trial. He claimed he acted in self-defense.

Such subway deaths are rare, but transit officials said last week they would consider installing barriers with sliding doors on some subway platforms. Other cities including Paris and London have installed such barriers.
