The Sensible Detox Diet

sensible-detox-dietPatients repeatedly ask me for advice on how to follow a detox diet.

I usually want to roll my eyes because it involves some kind of lemon juice diet or all lettuce diet.

So, I have created a guide on how to follow a more reasonable detox diet.

No more juice cleanses!

Now is the time to eat real foods that cleanse the body the healthy way.

Step 1: Get Rid of Added Sugars

sugar-in-foods

  • Look for every source of added sugars in your diet. This includes fruit flavored yogurts, flavored oatmeal packets, granola bars, most cereals, and sweetened beverages.
  • Look for the sugar names?on labels: Cane juice and cane syrup, corn sweeteners and high-fructose corn syrup, fruit juice concentrate and nectars, agave, and malt syrup. They all contain sugar.
  • Eliminate: Added sugars are not going to do anything to help detoxify your body.

One exception is real unprocessed?honey, which contains antibacterial properties.

Step 2: Load Up On Fruits and Vegetables

  • Fruits and vegetables contain fiber, antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. There is a mysterious synergistic health benefit we get from eating the plant fiber and phytochemicals that detoxifies the body naturally.
  • Increasing you fruit and vegetable intake will help to keep you fuller, reduce your calories, and flush out toxins. An added bonus is that you will consume more potassium when eating more plants. This will help to reduce water weight.
  • Limit other animal products temporarily. Don?t forget to include plant proteins like legumes, beans, and quinoa to maintain muscle mass.. This will help to ensure efficient bowel movements.

Step 3: Avoid Diet Drinks or Other Diet Products

How are you supposed to ?detox? if you are putting chemical diet products back in the body. This simply can not be allowed. Even if the chemicals do not harm us, the idea is to eat clean, healthy, whole foods.

Good Detox Beverage Choices:

  • Water
  • Water with Lemon
  • Green tea
  • Pure 100% coconut water
  • Herbal teas

Step 4: ADD Potent Detox Foods

These are foods to include more of when you are trying to detoxify the body: lemon, lime, green tea,?apple cider vinegar, kale, blueberries, flax seeds, broccoli, and other berries. These are types of foods that are known for their high antioxidant and/or antibacterial properties.

I never truly recommend that people undergo a ?cleansing? diet. You should always check with your healthcare provider first. We should always try to eat healthy with some small moderation. But, I understand that some want a jump start to get past their old habits.

Following a stricter routine for a few days can help reset your priorities, but make sure you have a more realistic plan ready to go. We can?t live by detox diets alone!

Have you ever tried a detox diet before?

BPAP: PHL BPO industry to support US amid threat of anti ...

Despite speculations that re-elected US President Barack Obama intends to reopen debates over an anti-outsourcing bill in the US Congress, the Business Processing Association of the Philippines (BPAP) on Friday said it would continue supporting American businesses and the fragile US economy.
?
The Philippine outsourcing industry would continue helping American companies ?? to ensure they are among the most competitive in the world while freeing up resources to create more jobs in the US,? said BPAP president and CEO Benedict Hernandez.
?
By outsourcing non-core operations to Philippine-based providers, American companies become more profitable and competitive, Hernandez said.
?
"Profitable companies hire more workers, both here and in the United States," he said.
?
The ?Bring Jobs Home Act? failed to pass in the US Senate last July. Its goal was to remove tax incentives from US companies that outsource non-core operations and manufacturing jobs to other countries. If legislated, the law would give US companies a 20-percent tax deduction on costs associated with closing outsourced operations and transferring jobs to the US.
?
However, numerous studies have shown that outsourcing has little negative impact on job losses and in fact fosters job growth in companies that outsource business processes, according to BPAP.
?Dartmouth?s Tuck School of Business economist Matthew Slaughter, in a study of the hiring practices of 2,500 US multinationals, found that for every job outsourced, nearly two new jobs are created in the US,? Hernandez noted.
?
?
The global outsourcing industry is seen generating $220 billion in revenues this year $35 billion in 2009, according the Everest Group.
?
?Demand for global IT-BPO services is huge and continues to expand at a rapid rate,? Hernandez said.
?
?Outsourcing is a win-win proposition, and we believe that both American and Philippine companies ? and American and Filipino workers ? will continue to benefit from the opportunities it provides,? he added. ? VS, GMA News

Use Your Webcam For Home Surveillance With These Tools

free webcam surveillance softwareI live in England, the country with the highest number of CCTVs than anywhere else in the world ? about 1 camera to every 30 people, it?s estimated. Obviously, that?s not enough (yes, that is sarcasm), so today I?m doing a round-up review of useful tools for adding CCTV to your own home.

In all seriousness, having your own home surveillance system can be a powerful deterrent to would-be intruders or office workers who tend to pinch your stapler, but I don?t suggest using it to spy on your own family members.

A note About UK Law: It is perfectly legal to use CCTV for personal and home security, though you?d be advised not to point it at a neighbour?s property. There is no law against taking pictures or video in a public place including roads and pathways, and the Data Protection Act 1998 or Human Rights Act does not cover domestic usage of CCTV. However, there are exceptions to this rule if your camera is capable of remote-controlled movement. This isn?t relevant for most webcams, but many IP cameras can perform pan and tilt.

A Note About US Law: There are generally no restrictions on private use of security cameras. However there are exceptions in places where people might otherwise have an expectation of privacy ? such as bathrooms.

Active Webcam (Windows $29)

Ryan reviewed this back in 2009, and while it has a reasonable level of complexity, it looks like it hasn?t been updated since, so the interface and website are atrocious. Functional then, but better options below ? keep reading.

free webcam surveillance software

VitaminD Video (Mac and Windows)

Free for 1 camera, but at low resolution. $200 gets unlimited feeds at hi-resolution. At this price, I would have expected something amazing; though the interface is easy to understand ? rules that look for objects ? the actions available are severely limited to either recording a clip locally, playing a sound, or emailing you. Pathetic, forget this one.

webcam surveillance

iSpy (Windows ? Free/Premium)

Matt did a full review of iSpy last year, so I won?t repeat him here. It?s functional, but not nearly as advanced as some other apps. The software is free, but you?ll need to subscribe for $8/month for online access to view your feeds anywhere in the world (a function which many cameras and other apps provide for free).

One of the top benefits listed for subscribers is ?reduced ads?! Probably best to stay away from this one.

webcam surveillance

SecureCam (Open Source, Windows only)

Mark highlighted this back in 2009 ? but for a completely free setup, SecureCam is still a good option today. With support for 4 cameras (unlimited if you donate) and a built-in webserver to view the motion captured images and videos, it?s a fully functional and comprehensive solution, though lacking some of the shine of premium apps.

webcam surveillance

Yawcam (Windows, Free)

I wrote a full tutorial on using YawCam as a surveillance camera last year and even set up notifications on my iPhone, so read that for a full review. It?s not nearly as advanced as some of the other apps here, but it is free.

webcam surveillance software

Xeoma (Mac/Windows/Linux $30)

Xeoma is a comprehensive, cross-platform premium surveillance solution at an affordable price.?Functionality is added by the use of modules. For instance, you can add an email module to email you if motion is detected, or an alarm module to sound an alarm, or you could run a random application that triggers your arduino fog machine, laser cannon and strobe, scaring away the intruder.

It?s infinitely expandable, and can even emulate an IP camera to send its own output to another remote copy of itself. Genius.

webcam surveillance software

The software does come with a limited free mode or 30 day full evaluation period, a?$30 license is enough for up to 4 cameras.

webcam surveillance software

Although the interface is custom, I found Xeoma to be a reliable solution and easy to set up chains of custom events. This is one of the most powerful packages I?ve looked at, and is highly recommended.

Security Spy (OSX; ?30-?80)

Quite pricey, at ?30 for a single camera, ?80 for 4.?While I would love to have thoroughly tested this, unfortunately the app launched with the main windows far too large and wouldn?t allow me to resize; adding additional cameras was also buggy. Options seem quite limited, especially considering the price. Stay away from this one, there are far better ones out there.

EvoCam (OSX, $30)

EvoCam is an interesting solution but not particularly user-friendly; however it does contain more modular functionality similar to Xeoma. Actions sets are created which can act on one or more cameras ? these consist of an active time (if you only want recording at night, for instance), a condition (including sound triggers), and an action to perform (speak text, email an image, save a video).

It takes a while to get used to the control flow, but EvoCam is probably the most powerful of all these surveillance apps if you?re okay with it being OSX only. Do be sure to check functionality with your IP cam first though.

free webcam surveillance software

My personal choice is Xeoma, which is both affordable and very customizable. On the free side, you can?t really go wrong with YawCam or SecureCam, but don?t expect as many features.?I think that?s all of them, but do let me know if I missed your favourite surveillance software, free or otherwise.

'In silico search for an endogenous anti-Alzheimer's molecule -- Screening amino acid metabolic pathways' published today in the Canadian Journal of Chemistry

Ottawa, Canada (November 7, 2012) Researchers at Dalhousie University have discovered a new technique using "computer-aided" drug design that may lead to an entirely new approach in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease (AD).

"Alzheimer's is a devastating disease for which no truly disease-modifying drugs are available. Our approach is completely novel. We explore how the human body attempts to protect itself from Alzheimer's, and then we exploit this to develop an entirely new approach to therapeutics," explained Dr. Weaver, a professor at Dalhousie University, clinical neurologist at Capital Health and IWK Health Centre, Canada Research Chair in Clinical Neuroscience, and the DMRF Irene MacDonald Sobey Chair in Curative Approaches to Alzheimer's Disease. "We are extremely excited about the results presented in this paper and believe that this may represent a new approach to the treatment of AD."

Weaver says that he and his fellow researchers have successfully identified molecules that are able to prevent the disease-producing aggregation of both beta-amyloid and tau the two proteins whose misfolding is implicated in the causation of Alzheimer's.

"Using 'in silico' (i.e. computer-aided) drug design, we have discovered new lead molecules that may aid in the future development of disease-modifying drugs for Alzheimer's disease," said Dr. Autumn Meek whose research into Alzheimer's has been funded by the Dalhousie Medical Research Foundation's "Gunn Family Graduate Studentship in Alzheimer's Disease". She works with co-authors Dr. Weaver and Mr. Gordon Simms in the Department of Chemistry at Dalhousie.

According to the Alzheimer's Society publication "Rising Tide: The Impact of Dementia on Canadian Society", Alzheimer's disease is an ever-growing concern in Canadian society, and as the population trends toward the aged it will place an increased strain on healthcare and families alike. It is believed that within a generation, the numbers of Canadians with Alzheimer's disease will more than double, and the cost of caring for individuals afflicted with dementia will increase from $15 billion annually to $153 billion annually.

'Modern Family' Star Ariel Winter -- Removed from Home After ...

Ariel Winter
Removed from Home
After Parental Abuse Allegations

EXCLUSIVE

1107-ariel-winter-tmz
Ariel Winter, the 14-year-old actress who plays Alex Dunphy on "Modern Family," has been removed from her home by a judge in the wake of serious allegations of physical and emotional abuse by her mother ... court sources tell TMZ.

There's a report Ariel is seeking legal emancipation from her mom so she can be with her boyfriend, but that report is false.

Court sources tell us ... on October 3rd, after a guardianship hearing, a judge determined the allegations that Ariel was being physically and emotionally abused by her mother Crystal Workman were serious enough that the judge placed Ariel in a temporary guardianship with her older sister Shanelle Workman. Our sources tell us ... mama Crystal was ordered to stay 100 yards away from Ariel.

Ironically, we've learned Shanelle suffered the same alleged abuse as Ariel.? Nearly two decades ago, the Department of Children and Family Services removed her from Crystal's home based on similar abuse allegations. Law enforcement sources tell us ...? D.C.F.S. placed Shanelle in foster care for more than 2 years.? She never went back to her mother.

According to court records, the judge has set another hearing for November 20.

Insomnia doubles risk of heart attack, stroke, research shows

The study by researchers in Taiwan found that people with insomnia were twice as likely to have heart attacks or strokes than those without the sleep disorder during the trial's four-year period. The research was presented Monday at the American Heart Association meeting in Los Angeles.

The findings add to previous research showing not enough sleep can contribute to high blood pressure, and waking too early may raise heart risks. Sleep should be part of the patient-doctor discussion during checkups, said Kristen Knutson, a sleep researcher who wasn't part of the study.

"A lot of people and many physicians don't ask about sleep," said Knutson, an assistant professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Chicago. "The first thing is to talk to their patients and also for the patients to talk to their doctors about their sleep and discussing sleep as one of the many important health behaviors like diet and exercise."

No one is certain how lack of sleep contributes to heart attacks and strokes, she said. It may be that the body's "fight or flight" system is more active with not enough sleep, which can increase heart rate and over time increase blood pressure and raise the risk for cardiovascular disease, she said.

Chronic insomnia affects about 1 in 5 adults and is also a risk factor for depression, substance abuse and impaired waking function, according to the National Institutes of Health.
