Morning Bell: Obamacare's Anti-Religious Freedom Mandate Starts ...

Yesterday, on the eve of its religious-liberty-crushing mandate taking effect, President Obama?s Health and Human Services Department (HHS) made an outrageous claim:

The Obama administration will continue to work with all employers to give them the flexibility and resources they need to implement the health care law in a way that protects women?s health while making common-sense accommodations for values like religious liberty.

Religious liberty is a fundamental right guaranteed under the First Amendment of the Constitution, not a mere ?value? whose worth is subject to devaluation by any given Administration?s policy. Regrettably, devaluation of this first principle is exactly what we?ve seen from the Obama Administration, which after a year of such lip service to religious liberty has held firmly to its original mandate despite widespread, intense, and ecumenical outcry against it.

HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius?s latest promise rings hollow and adds insult to the grievous injury that HHS is already doing to Americans who believe that religious liberty is not something that stops when one leaves a house of worship.

The anti-conscience HHS mandate is now in effect.

What happens starting today?

Today signals the beginning of a season of impossible decisions for employers who, for reasons of conscience, have not been paying for abortion-inducing drugs, contraception, or sterilization for their employees. Employers are now required to offer these services for ?free??meaning the employers pick up the cost of including these services in their health insurance plans. At the renewal of their health plan years, the HHS mandate will force employers into an untenable choice: violate their deeply held beliefs or forfeit the provision of health insurance altogether and risk steep fines.

Who are these victims of Obamacare?s trampling on faith? Family business owners who are producing jobs and growing the economy, Catholic social organizations that provide invaluable services to their communities, and evangelical colleges and universities educating the next generation, to name just a few. The Obama Administration says that business owners? rights to religious freedom shouldn?t cross into their everyday lives, claiming that ?for-profit, secular employers generally do not engage in any exercise of religion protected by the First Amendment.?

If employers don?t comply, what happens to them?

If employers don?t change their plans, they will be hit with fines?up to $100 per employee per day. But if they stop providing health coverage, Obamacare?s double whammy means that employers with more than 50 employees could instead be hit with fines for that.

For many, the level of these fines would mean going out of business. Applying the $100 per employee per day fine to Hercules Industries, for example?the family-owned business with 265 employees that is challenging the mandate in Colorado?would mean a fine of $800,000 per month?almost $10 million per year.

If Hercules were to drop its health coverage, forcing its employees into government-run exchanges under Obamacare, it would face a fine on faith of approximately $2,000 per employee per year, for a total of $530,000 per year.

What about the Administration?s ?safe harbor? promised to delay the mandate?s effects?

The Administration gave a very narrow exemption from the mandate to religious houses of worship serving their own members. Among the many employers who do not meet the Administration?s narrow religious exemption, some may be able to get a one-year reprieve from the HHS mandate under the Administration?s ?temporary safe-harbor? provision. Non-profit religious employers are eligible for the safe harbor only if they meet the Administration?s four-part test.

Even then, the temporary safe harbor only delays the inevitable, merely giving religious employers an extra 12 months to silence their consciences and get in line with the government?s mandate. Many religious employers and all for-profit employers do not qualify for the safe harbor and are subject to the HHS mandate starting today.

Is anyone still challenging this?

This fight is far from over. Almost 60 organizations have joined more than 20 lawsuits against the HHS mandate, including both for-profit and non-profit employers.

The first legal decision came just last Friday when a judge in Colorado issued a preliminary injunction against the mandate. The mandate will not be enforced against family-owned Hercules Industries while it has a fair hearing on the issue in court.

Is this the last of Obamacare?s mandates?

This is only the beginning of the problems that Americans will continue to see as Obamacare?s mandatory ?essential benefits? package takes shape. Obamacare gave enormous power to the HHS to craft the rules of the 2,700-page health care law, and we still don?t know very many details of how it will be implemented. Conveniently, many of Obamacare?s new rules and new taxes don?t hit Americans until well after the presidential election, in 2014.

The anti-conscience mandate is a warning sign for us all of how one-size-fits-all health care requirements will trample on religious liberty as well as individual liberty. Centralization of health care is simply incompatible with freedom?religious freedom or any type of individual freedom. The only way to restore our liberties is to repeal Obamacare.

Romney in Olympic spotlight with horse competition

LONDON (AP) ? Rarely has an Olympic dressage horse received as much attention as Rafalca.

The 15-year-old, German-bred mare is part-owned by Mitt Romney's wife and has been the source of political jokes questioning how the Republican presidential candidate can claim to know the problems of ordinary Americans when he inhabits the rarified world of dressage.

The sport, which is better known in Europe than the U.S., is the equine equivalent of ballet. Horse and rider (wearing top hat and tails) go through a series of steps that look like the horse is dancing: twirling pirouettes, prancing trots and the crowd-pleasing "flying change," which looks like the horse is skipping.

Ann Romney is expected to attend Rafalca's Olympic debut, which gets under way Thursday with the Grand Prix dressage test at Greenwich Park, home of all Olympic equestrian events.

She returned to London after her husband unleashed a torrent of criticism in the British press when, shortly after arriving for the Olympics' opening ceremony, he said the problems facing Olympic organizers were "disconcerting." It was the first of several gaffes that followed during campaign-style visits to Israel and Poland that were supposed to show off his foreign policy chops.

Rafalca's turn in the equestrian arena might focus an Olympic spotlight on another issue facing Romney, his vast personal wealth during tough economic times in the United States. He is worth as much as $250 million.

His wife's financial interest in Rafalca, a bay Oldenburg, has fed criticism that Romney is out of touch with the concerns of more modest-income voters. A top-flight dressage horse can cost more than six-figures, with upkeep running from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars a month. The Romneys own several horses.

The issue has been the inspiration of several episodes of political satirist Stephen Colbert's "The Colbert Report." Just this week Comedy Central aired a piece about Colbert taking a dressage lesson from Michael Barisone, the U.S. dressage team's reserve rider in the 2008 Olympics, in a bid to disprove the sport's elitist reputation.

"Dressage is the new American pastime!" Colbert declared.

Dressed like Roy Rogers, Colbert pressed Barisone to explain how a horse is selected to undergo the intense, years-long training that dressage requires, wondering out loud if at one point the horse just says: "Dad, I don't want to go into battle, I just want to DANCE!"

Out at Greenwich Park on Wednesday, such jokes were far from the minds of the U.S. dressage team, which has a shot at the bronze team medal. Germany and Britain are currently favored for the top medals.

"All of our horses are peaking at the right time," said U.S. team member Tina Konyot, who will ride Calecto V. "The other competitors are watching us."

Rafalca's rider Jan Ebeling said he welcomed the attention, negative or not, that the Romneys' stake in Rafalca has given the sport since it's given him a chance to show that dressage isn't about millionaires but hard work.

"I think the biggest misconception is always that people think that you just sit on a horse and they just kind of trot around in circles," he said. "That really is not the case."

A typical dressage horse requires up to a decade of training to compete at Olympic levels. Horse and rider work very much as a team, with the rider giving the horse invisible cues through subtle leg, hand and seat shifts. The horse is judged from 0-10 on executing a standard test of 33 movements:

?PASSAGE: a prancing, high-striding step

?PIAFFE: a passage done in place

?HALF-PASS: where the horse moves forward and sideways at the same time by crossing over its legs

?PIROUETTE: where the horse completes a full circle in place while cantering

?FLYING CHANGE: where the horse changes the sequence of its steps

The highest scoring teams from Thursday's Grand Prix advance to a second, harder test called the Grand Prix Special on Aug. 7. The 18 highest-scoring individual riders then perform a freestyle set to music to determine individual medal scores. That competition is Aug. 9.

The German-born Ebeling, who became a U.S. citizen in 1998, said the Romneys have been great supporters of the sport and have helped boost its visibility.

"I really welcome the attention," he said. "It's given us a fantastic opportunity to have our sport ? have visibility in our sport ? and show what we're really about, show that it is an Olympic discipline and show people how much we work to get there."

A campaign spokeswoman said Mrs. Romney's schedule in London was too busy for her to comment.

New Home Remodeling Trends | Designers Circle HQ

Home Remodeling trends show an increase in renovations for 18-34 year old family members who are staying in the home longer.? In addition adult children are moving back home after moving out.? Most parents in the baby boom population grew up with the notion that kids leave the nest after high school or college. However due to the stark economic realities boomers are putting off items they planned for their empty nest phase. ? They instead are seeing a large percentage of the 18-34 population choosing to stay or move back home. In a report from the PEW Research Center, they call this the ?boomerang generation?. The report says this generation has a tendency to move out for a short time only to boomerang right back. According to a Pew Survey, 24% of all adults age 18-34 moved back in with their parents due to the economy.

Here are some of the causes leading to this generation staying or moving back home

  • ?Cannot find a job
  • ?Had a job but got laid off
  • ?Found a job but it does not pay enough or is part-time
  • ?Can?t afford to live on their own even though they have a job
  • ? Debt from student loans
  • ? Credit card debt trying to stay a float
  • ? Employed and can pay the bills but couldn?t save enough due to huge increase in cost of living
  • ? Needs more education to qualify for a better job
  • ? Roommate lost their job and now cannot afford the bills

In our last post, we discussed how many households are expanding to bring home aging parents and relatives. The expansion will grow further as more and more of the 18-34 year old age group stay or move back home.

3 Multiple Generations Living Under One Roof

?

This will lead to an increase in home remodeling to meet the needs of Multi-generational living.? The US Census keeps track of the population trends and calls this Shared Households.

Shared Households are on the rise.

In a report from the US Census Bureau there is a 17% increase in Shared Households since 2007.

According to the report, a shared household is defined as a household with at least one resident adult who is not enrolled in school and who is neither the householder, nor the spouse or cohabiting partner of the householder. In the spring of 2007, there were 19.7 million shared households. By the spring of 2010, the number of shared households had increased by 11.4 percent, while all households increased by only 1.3 percent (Table 1). In 2010, shared households accounted for 18.7 percent of all households, up from 17.0 percent in 2007

Other discoveries:

  • ?30.1 percent of all adults resided in a shared household in 2010, compared with 27.7 percent in? 2007.
  • The number of additional adults increased by 3.4 million between 2007 and 2010.
  • Individuals age 25 to 34 made up 45 percent of the increase in additional adults between 2007 and 2010.
  • Between 2007 and 2010, the number of adult children who resided in their parents? household increased by 1.2 million to a total of 15.8 million.

Remodeling considerations for homeowners who open their home to adult family members, relatives and friends:

Each adult generation has different preferences and needs. Renovations must be carefully planned to address these needs without jeopardizing the resale value of the property, maintaining the architectural integrity and remodeling within budget constraints.

Typical remodeling projects include:

  • ? Additional bathrooms
  • ? Additional Kitchens or enlarged spaces
  • ? Whole house renovations
  • ? In-law suites for older and younger occupants
  • ? Additions
  • ? Separate private entrances
  • ? Finished basement suites
  • ? Technology improvements
  • ? Systems upgrades

To plan a project for the multiple needs of a younger generation homeowners can benefit immensely from the Design and Build Process. Working with one professional firm who has single source responsibility for the entire project and fulfillment of the occupants can save a lot of time and effort. Design/Build, especially with a Nurse Carpenter who understands the many facets of Multi-generational households, allows for a seamless transition from the concept to the completion of a remodeling project.

ICS updates reportedly starting for some 3G Galaxy Tab 10.1 models

Android Central

Good news for anyone living in a country where the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 has yet to be banned from sale. Reports from SamMobile? indicate that the Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich update for the venerable Tab 10.1 is now complete, and has started to roll out to customers' devices, starting with the 3G version in Italy. In addition to bumping the 10.1-inch tablet up to the most recent version of Android that's not Jelly Bean, you can also expect some visual changes to the TouchWiz UI, bringing the software experience in line with Samsung's Tab 2 range.

If you've got an Italian Galaxy Tab 10.1 (GT-P7500, with 3G), you can update now by heading to Settings > About Tablet > Software Updates, or by plugging your tablet into a PC running Samsung's Kies desktop software. Alternatively, if you're feeling adventurous, you could flash the firmware directly onto any 3G Galaxy Tab 10.1 -- you'll find an ODIN-flashable version version over at the source link.

We'd recommend most Tab owners outside of Italy sit tight and wait for the official update to roll out, though. It's been eight months already, what's another few days?

How to Use a Drain Snake - San Antonio Plumber

It?s not uncommon for drains to become clogged over time, and knowing how to fix them will save you time and money. Most clogged drains can be cleaned using a simple drain auger or plumbing snake. For the big jobs, you can always count on a professional plumber from Benjamin Franklin Plumbing of San Antonio. Our drain cleaning service in San Antonio has the efficient, innovative tools to repair the most stubborn clogs.

Fortunately, most clogged drains can be repaired on your own, providing you follow the proper regimen. For DIY plumbing repair, start with a sewer snake that can be purchased at any home improvement store. There are many varieties available, including handheld and electric powered ones; although most homeowners will find a hand operated, 50-foot plumbing snake to be adequate. Before you start, remove the drain cover from the drain you?ll be working on.

Learning how to use a drain snake is simple and starts by gliding the sewer snake into the drain hole until you reach the blockage. It?s important to push the sewer snake carefully but firmly as it may get stuck on the joints in the plumbing before it reaches the source of the clog. When you?ve finally reached the blockage, move the sewer snake back and forth so that it?s right against the obstruction. Do not push the blockage further down the plumbing.

Next, twist the handle of the sewer snake so that it starts to collect what?s in the plumbing. By rotating the device, the blockage becomes entangled in the coils on the snake. Once caught, lift the drain snake out of the drain and throw away the debris. Rinse the drain with clean water to remove loose debris, and replace the drain cover.

Using a sewer snake is the most effective way to remove stubborn clogs and avoids the need for chemical drain cleaners. If you cannot remove the blockage or the drain continues to clog, call in help from the professionals at Benjamin Franklin Plumbing of San Antonio. Our punctual plumbers can be reached at 210-549-9944.

Proper hair care particularly significant on wet days | Health and ...

You will find numerous situations by which special proper hair care items and methods comes in particularly handy. In the end, certain conditions can boost the force on locks making them weaker to break.

According an article on Oneindia by Suparna Chakraborty, rainy days are such a situation.

She claimed that people can be badly affected by the damp and by the additional winds that often accompany rain. Both of these can get consumers? tresses in ?bad shape?, she stated.

When it is raining, individuals should avoid complex hair styles, the writer suggested.

She remarked: ?During rains, hair tends to get frizzy, thus one should tie up her hair into a pony or in a bun. If you have cut your hair short try to fix it up with pins. This will help keep your hair from being frizzy and thus prevent hair breakage.?

Meanwhile, there are certain hair care products that should be applied during these weather conditions, Ms Chakraborty noted.

She commented: ?It is important to maintain the moisture of your hair. You can do it by wash your hair regularly with mild shampoo and using conditioner. Shampoo cleans your hair of all the excess oil and conditioner retains the moisture.?
