4 dead in Moscow airliner crash

MOSCOW (AP) ? A passenger airliner careered off the runway at Russia's third-busiest airport and partly onto a highway while landing on Saturday, broke into pieces and caught fire, killing at least four people.

Officials said there were eight people aboard the Tu-204 belonging to Russian airline Red Wings that was flying back from the Czech Republic without passengers to its home at Vnukovo Airport.

Emergency officials said in a televised news conference that four people were killed and another four severely injured when the plane rolled off the runway into a snowy field and partly onto an adjacent highway, then disintegrated. No collisions with vehicles on the major, multilane highway were reported.

The plane's cockpit area was sheared off from the fuselage and a large chunk gashed out near the tail.

The crash occurred amid light snow and winds gusting up to 15 meters a second (30 mph), but other details were not immediately known. A spokesman for Russia's top investigative agency, Vladimir Markin, said initial indications were that pilot error was the cause.

The state news agency RIA Novosti cited an unidentified official at the Russian Aviation Agency as saying another Red Wings Tu-204 had gone off the runway at the international airport in Novosibirsk in Siberia on Dec. 20. The agency said that incident, in which no one was injured, was due to the failure of the plane's engines to go into reverse upon landing and that its brake system malfunctioned.

On Friday, the Aviation Agency sent a directive to the Tupolev company's president calling for it to take urgent preventive measures.

Vnukovo airport spokeswoman Yelena Krylova said it had enough personnel and equipment to keep the runway fully functional Saturday. The airport resumed receiving planes after a break of several hours.

Prior to Saturday's crash, there had been no fatal accidents reported for Tu-204s, which entered commercial service in 1995. The plane is a twin-engine midrange jet with a capacity of about 210 passengers.

Vnukovo, on the southern outskirts of Moscow, is one of the Russian capital's three international airports.

Meet the woman battling Japan's whaling fleet in Antarctic ocean

British Sea Shepherd volunteer Natalie Fox

British Sea Shepherd volunteer Natalie Fox. Photograph: Sea Shepherd

One of Natalie Fox's most cherished memories is of kayaking just off the coast of America accompanied by inquisitive blue whales. They came to "hang out with us for two hours", said Fox, a 30-year-old environmental activist, originally from Cornwall. "The more time you spend with them in the ocean, the more you realise how special they are."

Now Fox, a co-founder of the campaigning group Women for Whales, is to be a key player in the Sea Shepherd conservation society's Operation Zero Tolerance. In its biggest venture to date, the society will soon be sending four ships to take on the Japanese whaling fleet in the Southern Ocean with the aim of preventing the death of even a single whale.

Almost three months ago, Fox, a surfing and yoga instructor, was summoned to Hobart, Australia. She was responding to an email that read: "There's a spot for you, but you've got to come, now! To Australia. Right away. And you're undercover, so you can't tell anyone."

Fox is aware that the operation will be a challenging one, especially since she is prone to seasickness. The icy conditions of the Southern Ocean whale sanctuary ? ideal for minke and fin whales but inhospitable for humans ? will be a test, although the chance to see icebergs at close quarters, she said, will be priceless. However, she will be spending most of her time cooking, in the galley of the Sam Simon, Sea Shepherd's newest vessel.

She is putting potential confrontations out of her mind. "I can't think about it until I'm in the moment or it's happening at that time, and hope that whatever happens, it's all good," she said.

The secrecy surrounding her "call-up" was necessary, as Sea Shepherd was in the process of acquiring the Sam Simon, which Fox has been living on in port with the other 23 crew members. The 56-metre ship began life as the Seifu Maru, an ocean research vessel used by the Japanese whaling fleet. Sea Shepherd said Japanese government officials failed to realise who was buying it.

The controls on the bridge are all labelled in Japanese and the former name remains on the side in raised metal outline. But there is also a brightly painted new nameplate: Sam Simon.

Sam Simon, the man ? one of the creators of the TV cartoon series The Simpsons and also an animal activist, privately funding a shelter in his home town of Malibu ? donated the money that enabled Sea Shepherd to buy this fourth vessel, which will join the Steve Irwin, the Bob Barker and the Brigitte Bardot in the Antarctic campaign.

Simon had been planning to join Operation Zero Tolerance but a cancer diagnosis ruled that out. However, 120 crew members from more than 20 countries, most of them volunteers, will join Sea Shepherd's founder, Paul Watson, in his latest bid to halt the whaling.

In an attempted counter-attack, the Japanese whalers ? in the shape of the Institute of Cetacean Research and the Kyodo Senpaku company ? have taken legal action. A court order issued by the ninth circuit court of appeals in the US on 17 December enjoined Sea Shepherd, Watson and anyone "acting in concert with them" from physically attacking the Japanese vessels or coming "any closer than 500 yards".

Gavin Carter, the whalers' Washington-based PR representative, says the order is to "ensure safety at sea".

Watson does not see it that way. "They are saying they are trying to protect their people from us. We've never injured any of them. They destroyed a $1.5m boat and almost killed six of our people," he said, speaking via Skype from the Steve Irwin at an undisclosed location. "[Yet] they didn't have to answer for it, they didn't have to pay compensation for it, they destroyed it and got away with it."

Both sides blamed each other for the collison that sank the Ady Gil in 2010 but an investigation by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority was inconclusive and unable to apportion blame.

"We haven't hurt anybody," continued Watson, "and yet they have this injunction against us, so I think any reasonable person would look at this and say: 'Whoa, this isn't fair.'?"

Watson says they are going to "use some imagination" in deciding how to respond to the order. They have time, as the Japanese fleet's departure has been delayed.

"As with all maritime operations, there are many operational factors that can affect the departure date," says Carter of the recent refit of the fleet's factory ship, the Nisshin Maru. It will not arrive in the Southern Ocean until mid to late January, halfway through the usual whaling season.

Watson is claiming that as a victory. "They're certainly not going to get half their quota, even if we weren't here, and we intend to make sure they don't get the other half," he says.

That sounds good to Fox. She is aware there will be challenges to be faced but said: "I'm just really, really happy to have the opportunity to be here and, literally, be doing something to save whales."

Scientists Turn To Unsaturated Fats For Healthier Ice Cream

Cover Image: January 2013 Scientific American MagazineSee Inside

Scientists are experimenting with unsaturated fats for a rich but less artery-clogging dessert

Ice cream is a complex, three-phase food system in which ice (solid), air (gas) and unfrozen water (liquid) coexist. Much that makes ice cream an indulgence derives from its relatively high fat content, which can range from 10 to 18 percent in premium varieties. In addition to its role in taste and flavor development, fat is crucial to ice cream's texture. No wonder, then, that most low-fat varieties fail to offer the same taste sensation.

Lately food scientists have found clever ways to experiment with unsaturated fats aiming to bring consumers the full satisfaction of ice cream with fewer of the health consequences associated with saturated fats. Solid fat builds structure in ice cream via partial coalescence, which occurs when two fat droplets collide and fuse only ?at their hip,? remaining distinguishable from each other. The fusion is mediated by crystals that protrude from the surface of the spherical droplets?imagine the thorns of a prickly pear?that pierce neighboring droplets as they collide. These droplets then aggregate and deposit onto the surface of air bubbles and stabilize the frozen foam. In this way, partial coalescence enables ice cream to taste creamier, hold its shape and melt more slowly.

Given that unsaturated fats are liquid, the original thought was that they would not be good candidates to make ice cream less of a sin. Recent research, however, has the skeptics thinking twice. New studies led by Douglas Goff of the University of Guelph in Ontario suggest that plateletlike or needlelike droplets (as opposed to spheres) that contain 40 to 60 percent unsaturated fats are very effective at building structure in ice cream. Such fats can be blends of any highly unsaturated oil (such as high-oleic sunflower or canola oil) and saturated fats such as coconut oil or cocoa butter. Platelets formed only when Goff's team added commonly used unsaturated emulsifiers, such as glycerol monooleate, which are thought to force the fat crystals to grow preferentially in one dimension, hence generating the needlelike profile. Because of their shape, the amount of fat needed to create a stable frozen foam (via partial coalescence) decreases. This opens up the possibility for low(er) fat, creamy, slow-melting ice cream.

Egypt lets building material cross its border into Gaza

ISMAILIA, Egypt (Reuters) - Islamist-led Egypt allowed building materials into Gaza via the Rafah crossing on Saturday for the first time since Hamas seized control of the Palestinian enclave in 2007, an Egyptian border official said.

It was part of a shipment of building materials donated by the Gulf Arab state of Qatar, which has pledged $400 million to finance reconstruction in Gaza. The Islamist group Hamas has run Gaza since driving out its rivals in the Palestinian Authority.

Israel tightened a blockade on the Gaza Strip after Hamas, which refuses to recognize the Jewish state, took power there.

Hamas has been hoping that the rise to power in Egypt of a fellow-Islamist government sympathetic to its cause will lead to a full opening of Rafah to commercial goods. Egypt's President Mohamed Mursi sent his prime minister to Gaza last month to show solidarity during a brief war between Hamas and Israel.

The Rafah border with Egypt is the only Gaza crossing not controlled by Israel, which withdrew its settlers and soldiers from Gaza in 2005. Cairo has restricted the use of Rafah crossing to travelers and medical relief, giving rise to extensive smuggling into Gaza through tunnels under the border.

The border official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that while the Egyptian authorities had agreed to allow the Qatari-donated material into Gaza, the shipment did not mark the start of the full opening of the crossing sought by Hamas.

An official in Gaza's Hamas government said it was a positive step. "We hope that Egypt will open this crossing permanently for goods so our people can meet their needs," said Ehab al-Ghsain, head of the Hamas government media office.

Palestinians said it was the first time anything other than people and medical supplies had been allowed in since 2006. Six truck loads of building material had crossed on Saturday, with more expected later in the day, the Egyptian official said.

The government of Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak, who was removed from power by a popular uprising nearly two years ago, looked on Hamas with suspicion bordering on outright hostility.

Leaders in the Muslim Brotherhood, which propelled Mursi to the presidency in a June election, had said they backed the idea of opening Rafah to trade. But Mursi has taken no public steps in that direction since taking office.

Cairo has long feared that opening Rafah fully might prompt Israel to close permanently the other crossings with Gaza, which it captured from Egypt in the 1967 Middle East war.

Ghsain said: "Rafah had been closed for goods for so many years and we always hoped such a policy would change, without exempting the Israeli occupation from their responsibilities. Israel must end the closure and reopen all crossings with Gaza."

Chinese government recalls British Marques

Texas Guardian Saturday 29th December, 2012

The Chinese government has asked Jaguar Land Rover's China unit to recall one hundred and ninety 2012 Evoque and Freelander vehicles produced on June 11th this year.

The General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine has said the recall was prompted by concerns about the rear brake calipers on the vehicles, which may lead to brakes failing and sudden tyre deflation.

The agency said another one hundred and forty seven 2012 Evoque and 2013 Evoque vehicles made between October 20th and September 18th would also be recalled due to problems in their steering boxes.

Jaguar Land Rover is owned by India's Tata Motors.

Vehicles such as the Land Rover and Jaguar are in high demand in China and other emerging markets.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was reelected president of the ruling Awami League (AL) unopposed Saturday for the seventh time, while LGRD Minister Syed Ashraful Islam was made general secretary, reports UNB.

The councillors of the AL, one of the oldest political parties of the country, unanimously elected them in its 19th council on the day as there were no other candidates for the posts.

In her instant reaction after the reelection as the party president for the seventh successive term, Hasina said: "It's a big responsibility?I expected there would be new leadership and I would assist them staying beside them. That's why I had no preparation for this."

She went on: "But I gladly accept the responsibility you bestowed upon me as the election is ahead of us."

Hasina claimed the party is now more organised than in the past and said once there were many brackets after the name of the party in 1981 but now there is none.

In his reaction, Ashraful said, "We have to work together as in the past. And honesty and devotion will be our main strength in this connection."

Earlier, AL leader Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim proposed Hasina's name for the post of president, which was seconded by Ashraful. Party leader Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif proposed Ashraf's name while Jahangir Kabir Nanak seconded it.

Rahmat Ali, Mozammel Haque and Yusuf Hossain Humayun acted as election commissioners at the council.

    Tigers Making Comeback in Asia

Camera trap images reveal tiger numbers rebounding across Asia, especially in southwestern India, where young tigers are leaving protected reserves due to population pressure, according to the Wildlife Conservation Society.

The WCS attributes the rise in different tiger groups to better law enforcement and protection of additional habitat. For example, a notorious poaching ring was busted in Thailand last year, and the gang leaders have been given prison sentences of up to five years ? the most severe punishments for wildlife poaching in Thailand's history, the conservation group said in a statement.

Tiger numbers have been rising steadily in Thailand's Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary since 2007, with a record 50-plus tigers counted last year, the WCS said. The sanctuary is part of the country's Western Forest Complex. This core spans 7,000 square miles (18,000 square kilometers) and is home to an estimated 125 to 175 tigers.

In India's mountainous landscape of Nagarahole and Bandipur national parks, tigers have reached saturation levels, with more than 600 individuals caught on camera trap photos in the past decade. Young tigers are leaving the parks along protected corridors and entering a landscape with a population of a million people, the group said. [In Images: Tigers Rebound in Asia]

Conservationists also worked with government officials in Russia to create additional protected areas for tigers. The country declared a new corridor, called the Central Ussuri Wildlife Refuge, on Oct. 18. The refuge links the Sikhote-Alin tiger population in Russia ? the main group of endangered Amur tigers? with tiger habitat in China's Heilongjiang Province in the Wandashan Mountains. The refuge ensures that tigers can move across the border between Russia and China in this region.

An estimated 3,200 tigers are living in the wild, with only 2,500 breeding adult pairs, according to TRAFFIC, a monitoring group funded by the World Wildlife Fund and the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. Tigers have lost 93 percent of their historical range, which once sprawled across Asia from Turkey to Russia and south to Bali, according to the group.

"Tigers are clearly fighting for their very existence, but it's important to know that there is hope. Victories like these give us the resolve to continue to battle for these magnificent big cats," Cristi?n Samper, WCS president, said in a statement.

GOP 'fiscal cliff' endgame: Let big government sting the middle class?

For some tea party Republicans, part of the political calculation ahead of the 2014 elections is whether going off the fiscal cliff would spell political disaster or instead be seen as a return to principled governance.

    By Patrik Jonsson,?Staff writer / December 29, 2012

A police officer stands guard outside the U.S. Capitol in Washington Friday. President Barack Obama and congressional leaders agreed to make a final effort to prevent the United States from going over the "fiscal cliff," setting off intense bargaining over Americans' tax rates as a New Year's Eve deadline looms.

    Mary Calvert/REUTERS

If President Obama and Congressional leaders fail to avert the ?fiscal cliff? of scheduled tax increases and spending cuts by 12:01 a.m. Tuesday, America?s 114-millon-strong middle class will take it hard on the chin ? a $3,500 tax blow per family, on average.

    ' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
    ' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

    '; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

Politicians make careers out of protecting the middle class, which is why the President has focused his solution on raising taxes just for richer Americans ? those making $250,000 and more ? while warning Americans in his weekly Saturday address that, ?Every American?s paycheck will get a lot smaller? if the fiscal cliff isn?t averted, which specifically ?would hurt middle class families.?

Republican leadership, too, has been forced into a corner, in part by Obama as well as the party?s own right wing, as members have failed to come to agreement over agreeing to some tax concessions for the rich in order to stave off what amounts to a wholesale middle class tax hike.

For some intractable Republican House members, political experts say, part of the political calculation ahead of the 2014 mid-term elections is whether going off the fiscal cliff would spell political disaster or whether it may be seen more broadly as a return to what many see as principled governance.

2012 enters the record books. Were you paying attention? A news quiz.

As Wall Street indices got jittery on Friday, it began to look like some kind of piecemeal deal that would include a tax compromise and extension of unemployment benefits could be done by the drop-dead deadline, but it could be contingent on Republicans having to come back to fight for spending cuts at a later date.

That development puts the spotlight straight back on the kind of anti-tax, anti-spend tea party principles that helped to give the GOP the House in 2010, but which also left the party deeply fractured after Obama?s reelection this November.

To be sure, there may be a deeper logic than simple obstructionism at play within the GOP caucus, where some members, the theory goes, may be seeing an opportunity to avoid direct blame for a major middle class tax hike while making a deeper point about how America should be governed. How? By letting middle-class Americans start bearing the actual cost of electing a progressive president and a Democratic Senate, neither of which has seriously addressed entitlement spending.

?How can we expect people to care about the growth of government if it doesn?t cost them anything?? writes Marc Thiessen, a fellow with the American Enterprise Institute, in a Saturday Washington Post column. ?Big government is great if you don?t have to pay for it. Well, now it?s time to pay the bill. Maybe when the costs of the stimulus, Obamacare and exploding entitlements are finally deducted from their paychecks, Americans will rediscover the virtue of smaller government.?

Liberals point to a counter-logic that they contend will drive even tea party Republicans to strike a last-minute deal to avoid the fiscal cliff.

?If the deal is reached ? the Republicans have won: they have locked in a federal tax system that collects so little total federal revenue that government can afford almost nothing aside from the military, interest payments, retirement programs and health care,? writes Jeffrey Sachs, author of ?The Price of Civilization,? on the Huffington Post.

YANGON, Myanmar (AP) ? Myanmar's cash-strapped opposition party is tapping into the prestige of its leader: Two sweaters hand-knit by Aung San Suu Kyi have been auctioned for $123,000.

A green-and-white sweater with a floral design sold at a Friday night auction to an anonymous bidder for 63 million kyat, or $74,120.

On Thursday, a Myanmar-based radio station won a bidding war for a multicolored V-neck that fetched $49,000.

Suu Kyi has not publicly reacted to the success of her party's two-day fundraiser, but aides said she was pleased with the results.

"Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is satisfied with the auction and the donations received," close aide Ko Ni said Saturday. "She needs a lot of cash to carry out projects for the welfare of the people." Daw is a term of respect in Myanmar.

The auction was part of a fundraising event organized by Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy party to raise money for education of poor children and health projects in Myanmar, an impoverished Southeast Asian nation also known as Burma.

Both sweaters were knitted by Suu Kyi at least 25 years ago when she was living in England and raising her two children, Ko Ni told The Associated Press.

"She made them when she was busy working, studying and taking care of her children," Ko Ni said. "She wants to send the message that people should not stay idle but be diligent."

Suu Kyi, a 67-year-old former political prisoner and winner of the 1991 Nobel Peace Prize, has become Myanmar's biggest celebrity as the country transitions from a half-century of military rule. She is generally guarded about the family she left behind in England ? but the auction indicates a new willingness to share her family history with an adoring public.

Ahead of the auction, Suu Kyi asked her brother-in-law in England to ship some of her personal belongings, which arrived in nine boxes on Wednesday just in time for the auction, Ko Ni said.

The Oxford graduate was raising two young sons with her late British husband when she returned to Myanmar in 1988 to nurse her dying mother. As daughter of the country's independence hero, Gen. Aung San, who was assassinated in 1947 when she was 2, Suu Kyi found herself thrust into the forefront of pro-democracy protests against the military regime.

Over the next two decades, she became the world's most famous political prisoner and won the adoration of her people, who call her "Amay Suu" ? or "Mother Suu," partly because she chose to stay with them over her own children. She declined opportunities to leave Myanmar, fearing she would not be allowed to re-enter.

Since her release from house arrest in 2010, Suu Kyi has reunited with her sons and completed a stunning trajectory from housewife to political prisoner to opposition leader in Parliament.

The proud new owner of the $49,000 red, green and blue V-neck sold Thursday said it was worth the money.

"It is priceless because the sweater was made my 'Amay' herself," said Daw Nan Mauk Lao Sai, chairwoman of Shwe FM radio station.

"I bought the sweater because I value the warmth and security it will give," she said, adding that she plans to hang it up in the station's office for the whole staff to see.

Audiogalaxy music app will shut down services entirely January 31st as its team joins Dropbox

When music streaming app Audiogalaxy announced its acquisition by Dropbox earlier this month and closed signups we feared the worst, and now it's been confirmed: the service is shutting down entirely on January 31st, 2013. It had previously announced subscribers would have access to their mixes until the end of this month, but after another month they'll have to move to a service like Google Play Music, or possibly self hosting with Subsonic or something similar. The original blog post mentioned a desire to bring "great new experiences" to Dropbox's 100 million plus users so we may see some of those features again, soon. As for the service itself, Founder Michael Merhej relaunched it just over two years ago after version 1.0 -- a web-based music file sharing service that eclipsed its competitors during its run from 1998 to 2002 -- was squeezed out by RIAA pressure, so we figure anything is possible in the future.

UFO-shaped gas station among this year's 'Preservation Wins'

    17 hrs.

It?s a travel itinerary as eclectic as they come: From a gas station shaped like a UFO, to an inn once proclaimed one of the most magnificent hotels in the country, to mystical rock pillars that fascinated an ancient culture.

Put them all together and you have part of a collection that may make history buffs smile and explorers reach for their maps.

Behold the list of ?Preservation Wins of 2012? put together by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, a nonprofit organization that has made it its mission to save America?s historic sites.

?These are places that were threatened in some way ? whether it was demolishing them or (fearing they would) fail and maybe they wouldn?t be preserved ? and essentially, they ended up being maintained or restored,? said Rebecca Morgan, a spokeswoman for the trust.

The list was assembled in no particular order???Morgan declined to rank the successes, calling each a great save.

Here are the sites that made the cut:

    Cesar Ch?vez National Monument???Keene, Calif.
In October, President Obama designated the property known as Nuestra Se?ora Reina de la Paz???the home, workplace and burial site of labor leader C?sar Ch?vez ? a national monument.

?This site marks the extraordinary achievements and contributions to the history of the United States made by C?sar Ch?vez and the farm worker movement that he led with great vision and fortitude,? the presidential proclamation reads.

?La Paz reflects his conviction that ordinary people can do extraordinary things.?

National Trust President Stephanie Meeks applauded the move, noting it was a big first step in celebrating the life and legacy of Ch?vez.

    Howard Theatre ? Washington
This historic landmark, which helped launch the careers of Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Marvin Gaye and The Supremes, sat vacant for decades, the trust said.

But in the spring of 2012, it was restored to its original 1910 appearance after a $29 million renovation. The venue is now once again showcasing artists and drawing stars including B.B. King, Little Richard and Tracy Morgan.

    Michigan Bell Building???Detroit, Mich.
Built in 1929 as the headquarters for Western Electric, this building was transformed this year from a vacant warehouse into a mixed-use space that will provide housing for the homeless, the trust noted.

The Neighborhood Service Organization, a Detroit nonprofit group, took charge of the project, creating 155 furnished, one-bedroom apartments inside the structure, along with a health care clinic, gym, library, computer room, art and music rooms, and a chapel.

'The Flying Saucer' Phillips 66 Gas Station???St. Louis.
When local preservationists found out this former gas station was threatened with demolition, they launched a public campaign to save the landmark, the trust said. Built in 1967, the glass and concrete building features a 120-foot circular roof and is a ?prized example of mid-century modern architecture,? the activists told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Their work paid off. In September, the saucer-shaped structure opened as a Starbucks and is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Chimney Rock National Monument???Pagosa Springs, Colo.
Located on more than 4,000 acres in the San Juan National Forest and home to the ancestors of the modern Pueblo Indians, this area was designated a national monument by President Obama in September.

?It is a living landscape that shapes those who visit it and brings people together across time,? he noted in a statement.

The ancient inhabitants who lived here 1,000 years ago left behind more than 200 homes and ceremonial structures on the mesa overlooking the two stone spires called Chimney Rock and Companion Rock. The moon rises perfectly between the rocks every 18.6 years.

The National Trust calls the area the single most important cultural site managed by the U.S. Forest Service.

    Pillsbury A Mill???Minneapolis, Minn.
Declaring the mill ?a masterpiece of industrial architecture and the largest and most advanced facility in the world at the time of its completion in 1881,? the trust included the vacant complex on its list of America?s 2011 Most Endangered Historic Places.

But this year, local lawmakers gave a thumbs-up to a plan which will convert the building into 250 low-income apartments.

    Los Angeles Boyle Hotel???Los Angeles
Built in 1889, the hotel later fell into disrepair and was converted into an apartment complex. The nonprofit East Los Angeles Community Corporation bought the property in 2006 and began an extensive renovation, seeking to restore some of its grandeur. The project was completed in August, with many of the original features back in place, including the grand staircase and foyer, the brick fa?ade, and the corner cupola and cap.

    Emerson School???Denver
This 1885 schoolhouse underwent a ?green rehabilitation? in May, and now features a new geothermal heating and cooling system, a complete interior rehabilitation, window restoration, and new fencing, trees and landscaping.

Wake Forest Biotech Place???Winston Salem, N.C.
Two former R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. warehouses now serve as a state-of-the-art life sciences center. Opened this year, this development enhances Winston-Salem?s rich history and architectural heritage, the trust said.

    Hotel Lafayette???Buffalo, N.Y.
When it opened its doors in 1904, this inn boasted a grand lobby, enormous windows and posh rooms, prompting reviewers of the time to proclaim it "one of the most perfectly appointed and magnificent hotels in the country,? according to its biography. This year marked the completion of a rehabilitation project that converted the hotel into a mixed use building of apartments and businesses. ? ?

How Reading The Referral Engine Changed My Business

What if you could teach your business to market itself?

What if ? instead of relying on expensive paid ad campaigns and direct sales, your business thrived based on referrals from happy customers?

    Are You Good at Sales?

In starting my own business, I?ve learned that I?m not a very good sales person. I just don?t have that special instinct that I?ve seen great salespeople have. I?m too worried about inconveniencing people to ask for a sale.

A few months ago I read a book that literally changed my business. I had this book on my shelf for months before finally reading it. Once I finally picked it up, I couldn?t put it down.

The book is The Referral Engine, by John Jantsch.

Why We Refer Our Favorite Businesses

One of the premises of the book, is that people are ?wired? to make referrals to family and friends. It feels good to be ?in the know? about a great new restaurant, hip new club, or some new product and tell your friends about it.

Think about the last time you were walking down the street and someone stopped and asked you for directions. Didn?t it feel good to help them out and get them pointed in the right direction?

I know I enjoy referring my favorite products and businesses to my family and friends.

Creating a Compelling Experience For Your Customers

In this global economy, just about everything is a commodity that can be purchased cheaper somewhere else.

The way to differentiate your business is to provide real value, and deliver a compelling customer experience. People want to know that you are listening, and that you care about them and are willing to help them.

What if you could construct your ?customer experience? in a way that they are truly satisfied and thrilled with your product and support, and are glad to tell people about you? What if you invested your time and money here instead of buying ads and hiring direct sales people?

That?s what The Referral Engine advocates ? building your business in a way that provides remarkable products and services. So remarkable that your customers will want to refer you to their friends.

    Starting My Business?

Right from the beginning I imagined Expand2Web as a customer service company ? one that provides real value and that people are thrilled to work with.

My business role models include Tony Hsieh from Zappos, Jeff Bezos from Amazon, Jason Fried from 37 Signals, and now John Jantsch from Duct Tape Marketing. These companies all provide great products or services, and legendary customer service.

When we started selling our first product ? The SmallBiz WordPress Theme ? we answered every customer email and question (and still do).

As we scaled up and sold more themes, that meant hiring a full time person to handle the support and build a process around delivering great customer support in a world where many WordPress themes and software providers simply refer customers to a forum where customers help each other out.

We invested heavily in customer support so we could get back to every customer and help them be successful, and drive great new features back into our product.

This meant hiring a highly skilled person to build a customer support process and work directly with customers and answer their questions, and go above and beyond what anyone expects. And highly skilled people aren?t cheap!

But I was still missing something.

Building A Business That People Want To Refer

Reading this book made me realize something. Although we were getting referrals from our customers naturally, we weren?t really leveraging our heavy ? and expensive ? investment in customer service.

As you?ll see, we weren?t setting expectations about referrals early in the sales process, we weren?t making it easy for people to refer us to others, and we weren?t ASKING for referrals, even though most of our customers were happy to provide them!

So I followed the advice that John Jastsch gives in his book ? we mapped out every customer interaction to see how we could provide a truly exceptional experience.

The book gave us a structure to leverage that investment in customer service and provide more value to our customers at the same time.

    Customer Interaction Touchpoints

    Customer Interaction Touchpoints

You can see from the map above, there are a lot of ways we interact with our customers.

Our Referral Action Plan for Expand2Web:

Here are a few of the things we did to improve our customer experience and encourage referrals:

    1) We started setting expectations with potential customers early.

Before a customer even buys our product, we started setting expectations that we would ask them for a referral (when we deliver on our promise). On the sales pages and other pages about our products we explain that our mission is to make them so happy and successful they will want to tell their friends and co-workers about us.

This has the dual purpose of setting expectations that we will deliver real value and do whatever we can to make them happy, and also that we will ask them for a referral once we?ve delivered on that promise.

    2) We created a ?Customer Welcome Kit? that welcomes every new customer, and helps them succeed.

Another excellent suggestion from the book was to create a customer welcome kit. We followed this and created a customer download area so that each customer could log in and get 24/7 access to the latest version of our software, to our support, and step-by-step training guides.

    3) We added some unexpected bonuses for our customers in the customer welcome area.

For example, we found that the biggest issue for many of our SmallBiz customers was learning how to do things in WordPress. So we licensed a series of 19 short WordPress tutorial videos and included that free to our customers.

    4) We ASK for referrals at key points in the customer relationship and make it safe and easy for customers to refer us to their friends and family.

We?ve learned the crucial points to ask for referrals, and how to do that in a way that our customers feel safe and want to refer us.

For example, in the book, John Jantsch points out that there are some key times in your customer interactions that are best for asking for referrals.

Strangely, right after a support request is one of them. We?ve been working on ways to politely ask for referrals from our customers in a risk free way, and to make it easy for them.

Benefits, for Us AND Our Customers

This is a process that we are continually refining and improving. But already it has helped our business tremendously in four ways:

    1. Improved customer experience. which leads to more happy customers
    2. Better product. By reaching out to customers in this way, we get better feedback that goes right back into making our product better. We?ve had several new releases with great feedback from customers, and have another one coming out shortly that contains some fantastic new capabilities driven by customer feedback.
    3. Better relationships. With our customers. Not being a natural salesperson, it was hard for me to ASK customers for a referral. But asking for their help has led to many new relationships with my customers that I never would have had before. It turns out many people welcome the discussion, and are very willing to help.
    4. Increased referrals. This has already increased sales for us in a significant way.

Our mission now is to continue improving this process by creating an ever more compelling customer experience, from pre-sales through support, and making it easier for our customers to refer us to their family and friends. This is our primary marketing vehicle and the way we grow our business.

What about you? How do you get new customers? Do you pay for ads? Do SEO? Or are you building a business that your customers will refer to their family and friends?

p.s. When I read a great book, I make a mind map of it because it helps me remember the key things from the book. Here?s a copy of the mind map I made from the Referral Engine in case it is helpful to you.

Mysterious ASUS P1801-T visits the FCC, might be the finished Transformer AiO

The FCC sometimes gets a peek at hardware and reveals nothing but a model number to hint at what's passed through its labyrinth. The latest filing leaving us scratching our heads is for the ASUS P1801-T, a "tablet" which could be the final version of the Transformer AiO prototype we saw back at Computex. How did we arrive at the AiO? Well, the model number is a possible clue -- ASUS' Eee Slate B121 has a 12.1-inch panel, so P1801-T may point to this device having 18 inches of screen. As ASUS' dual-OS prototype all-in-one is the only (sort of) tablet we've seen with roughly that many inches, we assume the company is getting paperwork done before a proper launch at CES 2013. A "P1801" running Android 4.1.1 has also popped up at GLBenchmark, with Tegra 3 graphics and thus a Cortex-A9 CPU inside by default. If ASUS is keeping two OS's as per the AiO prototype, that processor caters for only one Microsoft product -- Windows RT. We'll just be kept wondering until we hear something official, but at least for us, an 18-inch Android / RT super-tablet and part-time desktop sounds like it could be a hard sell.

Around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, police responded to a call for a domestic dispute between Jones and his wife in Duluth.

LG?s latest projector system is powered by freaking lasers

    5 hrs.

Until now, all consumer front projector systems?produced light using lamps or in rare cases LEDs. The new?LG HECTO FP system, on the other hand, uses lasers for illumination instead. Yes, lasers.

As LG announced on Wednesday, the new projector system uses lasers and a Texas Instruments DLP chip to form images. Typical home front projectors require around a 9 to 12 foot distance from the lens to a 100-inch screen. The LG HECTO requires only a 22-inch throw to fill the screen and can be placed on the floor or the mounted to the ceiling.

The LG HECTO Laser Projection TV will be sold as a complete system with a 100-Inch diagonal screen, a built-in ATSC TV tuner, HDMI switching and a Wi-Fi connection for streaming video.

Specifications include a rated 1,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, 1080p resolution, 3 HDMI inputs, an optical audio input, RS-232 interface. Audio is produced by two 10W built-in speakers. The projector measures 5.7-inches high. The HECTO Laser projector does not have 3-D capability. LG has not? provided a brightness rating, a key specification. (Lasers offer the promise of very high intensity using low power.)

The screen is a fixed design and unlike theater screens its surface is black not white. LG claims the system will render a vivid, high contrast crisp image, even in lighter viewing environments.

The Laser TV supports LG's Smart TV platform and will stream movies via Netflix?and?YouTube as well as other services and?apps via its built-in Wi-Fi wireless Internet connection. The HECTO also includes LG's latest Magic Remote control.

LG claims its laser based illumination system has a lifespan of up to 25,000 hours, which is 5 times or more the life of traditional mercury-based lamps.

The LG HECTO Laser projector will be demonstrated at the 2013 International Consumer Electronics Show early next month. We expect pricing and availability to be announced at the show.
