GOP's Bachmann limps to Iowa caucus finish line

(AP) ? Encountering small crowds and fresh viability questions, Republican Michele Bachmann slogged into the final weekend of Iowa caucus campaigning Friday looking for any spark to her flagging bid.

The closing week hasn't been kind to the one-time GOP contender: She's losing staff. She's faced calls to abandon her bid. And she has no money.

The difficulties were evident in two restaurant stops where reporters outnumbered patrons.

"Our effort wasn't to bring crowds out. We were just dropping in," she said outside a caf? in Early.

The Minnesota congresswoman is at the back of the pack in polls. But she vows to soldier on, even if that means her candidacy will split the vote of pivotal conservatives in Iowa and allow for victories by a candidate who isn't seen as adhering as strongly to GOP orthodoxy ? like Mitt Romney or Ron Paul.

Regarded as a tea party heroine, the only woman in the Republican race has struggled to revive her campaign since her standing dropped shortly after she won a statewide test vote in Iowa. That turned out to be the high point of her campaign.

Iowa Rep. Steve King, one of Bachmann's closest allies in Congress, came to one of Friday's events. He praised her but he stopped short of an outright endorsement in a race that's so far kept him neutral.

"I have not made a commitment on this presidential race but I've made a commitment to this great friend to always be this great friend," King said of Bachmann.

She's spent the final week before Tuesday's Iowa caucuses on a bus tour of the state's 99 counties. Sometimes the crowds barely registered double digits; in other places they spilled out the doors.

But instead of ending the exhausting sprint on a high note, Bachmann found herself facing a new reality: Rick Santorum was the conservative candidate whose standing was rising ahead of the caucuses, not her.

She also found herself feuding with high-level advisers, only the latest to abandon her.

Two top Iowa advisers left the campaign on successive days this week, with her state chairman, Kent Sorenson, quitting and then going so far as to endorse Paul within hours of campaigning with her. A day later, Wes Enos said he was leaving his job as Bachmann's political director.

Furious, Bachmann spent much of Thursday accusing Sorenson of switching allegiances for money. He denied it. But the candidate found herself in a daylong spat rather than hammering home her closing message to voters.

To some, it was another sign of a campaign in free-fall.

"If you can't get your campaign on one page, it's really hard to think you're going to get a country on one page. The timing is horrible," said veteran Iowa Republican strategist David Roederer, who is unaffiliated in this year's race but held top Iowa posts in John McCain's 2008 campaign and George W. Bush's 2000 bid.

By Friday, she deflected questions on the subject and signaled she was ready to move on.

Still, it didn't help that the departures came on top of calls by some Iowa pastors that either she or Santorum leave the race so evangelical voters can consolidate their support and block a victory by Romney or Paul. She quickly rejected the plea.

Brad Cranston, a pastor from Burlington who originally liked the idea of a merged campaign, said he's given up on that prospect and will stick with Bachmann. So will Pastor Bill Tvedt of Oskaloosa, even if he knows her chances of winning have taken a hit.

"Maybe she is out of the running at this point," Tvedt said. "I think she can come back. To bail out on the basis of electability is self-defeating to the process."

But even if she stays in the race through Tuesday, it's doubtful she could sustain a campaign beyond that.

Despite her reputation as a prolific fundraiser, she's virtually out of money. Bachmann didn't air a single TV ad in December and won't broadcast one until the day before the caucuses.

Instead, she's rolling out Internet videos, like the one she filmed this week that cast her as the "Iron Lady" of the 21st century.

And she's urging Republicans on the fence to ignore her stagnant or slipping poll numbers ? and Santorum's rise.

It's unclear whether she's having any luck.

Recent college graduate Adam Fischer sized up Bachmann in central Iowa and liked her solidly conservative voting record, but he said he may still opt for Santorum.

"I don't want to become subject to that poll mentality because that's what gets us weak candidates," Fischer said. Then he acknowledged that the one with the head of steam come Tuesday will probably get his vote.

Stocks slide on signs of jitters at European banks

(AP Photo/Richard Drew, File)

(AP) ? Stocks fell Wednesday after Europe's central bank reported that its overnight deposits hit another record, the latest indication of worry among European lenders.

The Dow Jones industrial average lost more than 130 points in midday trading, and the Standard & Poor's 500 index fell after five days of gains.

The European Central Bank said the continent's banks parked a record $590.72 billion with it overnight. That means those banks are less willing to take the risk of making short-term loans to each other, opting instead to earn low interest rates from the ECB. The disclosure also hurt the euro, which fell over 1 percent against the dollar, to $1.29.

The worrying news from the ECB overshadowed two successful auctions of Italian government debt. Italy was able to pay much lower borrowing rates than it did in auctions last month. The strong demand from investors raised hopes that Italy would be able to avoid sinking into a financial crisis, as smaller countries like Greece and Portugal have.

John Merrill, chief investment officer at Tanglewood Wealth Management, said markets would remain vulnerable to flare-ups in Europe's long-running financial crisis until leaders there come up with more convincing solutions for paying down their enormous debt loads and keeping the 17-nation currency union intact.

"We live in a Band-Aid world," Merrill said. "Nobody really is addressing underlying issues."

European leaders agreed at a summit Dec. 9 to forge closer fiscal ties over the long term, but investors are still worried that Greece might default on its debt or be forced to leave the euro bloc. A Greek exit from the currency union would likely cause huge disruptions for the country's economy and losses for European banks that hold Greek government debt. Investors fear that could cascade into another global financial panic, as happened in 2008 following the collapse of the U.S. investment bank Lehman Brothers.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 136 points at 12,153 as of noon. Eastern. Materials and energy companies were leading the declines. Caterpillar Inc. was down over 2 percent and Alcoa Inc. fell 1.4 percent. Only one of the 30 stocks in the Dow average rose, AT&T Inc.

Trading was very quiet in a holiday-shortened week. Markets were closed Monday in observance of Christmas. The Dow closed 2 points lower Tuesday.

The S&P 500 was down 15 points at 1,250. It was the first decline for the S&P index after five days of gains, and turned the index negative for the year. The Nasdaq composite declined 32 points at 2,593.

The Bank of Italy raised $11.8 billion in two bond auctions, reflecting investor approval of the country's recently passed austerity measures. The yield on Italy's six-month bill offering was half the interest rate the country paid in a similar auction last month. The yield on the country's 10-year bond remained dangerously high, however, at 6.93 percent. It had risen to 7 percent Tuesday, a level that is considered unsustainable.

Italy is the euro zone's third-largest economy and is considered too big to save under the euro zone's current bailout funds. Investors have grown fearful over the past few months that Italy will find it difficult to pay off its massive debts, which stand at around $2.5 trillion.

The worries were reflected in U.S. bank stocks. Bank of America Corp. fell 3 percent, while Regions Financial Corp. fell 3 percent.

In other corporate news:

? Sandridge Energy Inc. stock is down over 3 percent on news that it is selling drilling rights in two states to a Spanish energy company, Repsol YPF.

? Cavium Inc. fell 2 percent, a day after the chipmaker said its fourth-quarter results will fall below its previous forecast.

Apple Wins Infringement Lawsuit

This week the U.S. International Trade Commission came to their final ruling in one of the many Apple lawsuits regarding patent infringement by Android manufacturers. This specific case was Apple against HTC for the apparent infringement of a patent regarding how email address and phone numbers are automatically pulled from emails and text messages.

The patent infringement case was considered a win for Apple as the ITC officially ruled that HTC must now stop importing any and all offending smartphones immediately. HTC will not be fined but this is still enough of a victory to hopefully prevent future issues like this and send a message to Android and other manufacturers that infringement will not be tolerated. No word on the remainder of lawsuits on the tablet involving Apple but there are still quite a few waiting to be dealt with in the coming months.

Man killed amid Britain's post-Christmas sales (AP)

LONDON ? A teenager was fatally stabbed and a second man wounded in attacks on London's most famous retail street as thousands of shoppers flocked to Britain's capital seeking post-Christmas bargains.

The killing of the 18-year-old man on Oxford Street on Monday ? and a second wounding in the same road ? did little to deter shoppers crowding into neighboring stores in the landmark shopping district. Bargain hunters were also largely untroubled by a subway strike which badly disrupted the city's public transport services.

Selfridges ? close to the scene of Monday's stabbing and one of Britain's most popular department stores ? reported its biggest ever first hour of trading Monday morning, while the New West End Company, which represents traders on central London's shopping streets, reported 15 million pounds (US$23.5 million) in sales in the first three hours of trading.

Jace Tyrrell, of the New West End Company, said hundreds of thousands of people had visited central London retailers, despite action by police to cordon off parts of Oxford Street and temporarily close some stores after the attacks.

"These incidents are extremely rare on Oxford Street and we understand arrests have been made," she said. "The emergency services were quick to respond and have cordoned off the street as they continue with their investigations. We are working to ensure the street is open to businesses and shoppers tomorrow."

Tyrrell said shopkeepers had requested a meeting with police to discuss the incidents. "We understand both incidents involved gangs of youth who were known to each other (and) the police, and did not involve individual shoppers," she said.

London's air ambulance helicopter had earlier rushed to the street following the fatal stabbing.

Authorities said the teenage victim died before medics could administer help, while amateur video footage showed police struggling to part large crowds of shopper to allow emergency vehicles to reach the man.

Police erected a tent outside a Foot Locker sports store as they carried out investigations and confirmed that about ten people had been arrested in connection with the death.

Officers said a second stabbing took place close by ? on the corner of Oxford Street and Regent Street ? but insisted it wasn't immediately known if the two incidents were linked.

Det. Chief Insp. Mark Dunne, of London's Metropolitan police, said two groups of young people appeared to have become involved in a large-scale altercation before the teenager's death.

Dunne said that little more was known about the circumstances, but there were likely to be large numbers of witnesses. "This is probably the busiest place in the United Kingdom right now, on the busiest shopping day," he told reporters at the scene.

"A number of weapons have been recovered from that scene ? whether I have got the murder weapon I don't know. There's an assortment of items, but no guns," he said.

In the second attack, a 21-year-old man was stabbed in the leg and is being treated at a hospital for his wound.

Police said in a statement that three men had been arrested, but it was "too early to say whether this incident is linked to a fatal stabbing on Oxford Street."

On London's subway network, the ASLEF train drivers' labor union staged a one-day strike to demand extra pay and additional time off for members working on the public holiday.

Despite the disruptions, huge crowds ? some lining up outside stores from midnight ? rushed into department stores in London and other British cities as soon as doors opened early Monday.

The London Underground, the organization that manages the subway system, condemned the move, saying it was pointless and demonstrated "a complete disregard for our customers." Authorities said extra buses were running in main shopping areas to cater to the increased flow of travelers on one of the year's busiest shopping days.

The ASLEF union has warned it plans to stage three more strikes in January and February if the dispute is not resolved.

Chinese grandmother's touch gives Christmas dinner its zest

My Chinese grandmother, Tina, sits to my right at the head of our Christmas dinner table, the matriarch of the family, poised, shoulders up straight and a sincere look on her face. She quietly eats her food, listening to her family as we loudly banter.

I'm admiring her, mid-bite into a beautifully golden pork rib. My hands are sticky from the sweet glaze, and I'm busy searching the packed table of food before me for another napkin.

"Pass the sweet rice, please," squeals my younger sister Jessica, oblivious to the bliss I'm experiencing. She playfully nudges me to hurry up.

"Hey, while you're over there, can you give me a slice of that prime rib?" yells my dad. "Make it an end piece."

My grandmother's eyes shift from one family member to another, taking in the moment.

She is a tough woman. She's a cancer survivor who doesn't take nonsense from anyone and is the first to tell you when she's unsatisfied with something ? but you'd never know it by looking at her. Her eyes are large, round and kind, and her deepest wrinkles are those around her mouth, having formed over the years from frequent smiles.

"Grandma, why do you put that much soy sauce in there?" I asked last Christmas Eve while she whipped up a batch of her famous sweet rice in her kitchen.

"Because it tastes good," she quickly replied.

Undefeated, I kept on with my playful interrogation. Her sweet rice is one of my favorite dishes, never failing to make an appearance on our holiday table for fear of an all-out family riot.

"OK, Grandma, but how much soy sauce do you put in it?"

"Oh, you know?. You just put it in," she replied with a concerned look, as if knowing how much to put in was an innate skill that disappointingly skipped my generation.

Her sweet rice dish is made of a special glutinous rice she cooks by thoroughly soaking the rice, pouring boiling water over the rice, then stir-frying rather than steaming to cook. It's a special trick she says she learned from an old cook in Los Angeles' Chinatown ? one of her cooking legends. She then mixes in chunks of caramelized lap cheong (Chinese sausage), earthy dried black mushrooms and dried shrimp. The rice clumps in your mouth, offering hints of white pepper and salty soy sauce in every bite, while the cubes of caramelized sausage are like heavenly bits of Chinese bacon.

My grandmother and her family came to the United States from the Chinese province of Canton in 1951; she was 15 years old. Her first job was selling ice cream for 95 cents an hour at the back of a bakery in Chinatown, close to where she and her family lived. She got married when she was 19 and felt it was her obligation to know how to cook for her family.

"When I got married, I learned to cook myself," explained my grandmother matter-of-factly. "You have to."

For as far back as I can remember, our holiday tables have resembled a multiethnic potluck. The American dishes are requested by my dad, who's of Russian and British descent and claims an adverse reaction to spices. For him, a HoneyBaked ham normally sits in the middle of our table, accompanied by a prime rib, made by Uncle Terry ? sous chef to my grandmother. I used to spend my summer vacations with Uncle Terry at my grandmother's house. He taught me how to properly chop with a knife and would frequently watch the show "Yan Can Cook" with me and my sister, always repeating to us the line "If Yan can cook ? so can you."

A couple more varied dishes are sprinkled across the table: a green salad with a fantastically creamy homemade Thousand Island dressing from my mother's older brother Kelly and a smoky chipotle yam gratin inspired by my love affair with Mexican cooking. Kelly's wife, Rene, is half-Lebanese. She usually makes a giant bowl of her famous tabbouleh. And my mom's younger brother Garry likes to bring Cuban guava and cheese rolls from Porto's Bakery in Glendale. For dessert, it's either a delectable apple cake or pumpkin bars baked by my mother.

The real holiday magic, though, is provided by my grandmother. Along with her sweet rice, she makes a list of family requests and dishes her mother used to make for the holidays. One family favorite is her barbecue pork ribs with a glistening honey sauce and peppery bite. The glaze is delightfully sticky, making finger licking a necessity.

If we are lucky, my grandmother will make her rice cakes, small pillows of rice that resemble fat noodles, saut?ed in a dark soy sauce with bits of celery, green onion and more lap cheong.

My grandmother's ma po doufu, a Sichuan dish resembling a giant bowl of bright red mush, is always a welcome favorite (unless you're my dad) ? a steaming bowl of silken tofu in a tear-inducing spicy chile sauce. Its flavor is a pleasant surprise given its appearance. The most comforting dish you can eat if you find yourself feeling under the weather.

It's fun to marvel at all the different colors, flavors and smells before digging in. A little bit of sweet rice and smoky yams on top of a bite of prime rib? Why not?

For as long as I can remember, my grandmother has cooked for every family gathering. My fondest holiday memories involve her standing at her kitchen stove. Watching her cook is like watching an artist paint a picture. She artfully wields her spatula, giant wok and hot fire, adding drops of oyster sauce or sesame oil and pinches of white pepper until she's satisfied.

She's been making the same recipes so long she can tell if something will taste right just by looking.

"I cook my own formula, my own way that it is," my grandmother recently tried to explain. "Good cooks have something that you don't know, that's why my food tastes good."

By the time my family holiday dinner winds down, everyone at the table seems to let out a unanimous, satisfied sigh. We make our way to the living room to exchange presents, everyone happier and heavier than when they arrived.

I sneak back into the kitchen for a couple of more bites of sweet rice after I've had a full share of my mother's dessert. My grandmother catches me, lets out a little laugh and offers one of her sweet smiles.

Officials step up efforts to find missing toddler (AP)

WATERVILLE, Maine ? As the FBI stepped up its efforts to find a 20-month-old girl who disappeared from her father's home over the weekend, investigators combed through trash bins, drained a stream and pored over more than 100 leads offered by the public.

Waterville Police Chief Joseph Massey refused to speculate Tuesday on whether Ayla Reynolds was alive, saying authorities are focused on finding her. The investigation remains a missing-person case, he said.

Meanwhile, in his first public statement, the girl's father, Justin DiPietro, said he doesn't know what happened to her.

"I have no idea what happened to Ayla, or who is responsible," he said. "I will not make accusations or insinuations towards anyone until the police have been able to prove who's responsible for this."

DiPietro released the statement through the Waterville Police Department, saying his family and friends will do "everything we can to assist in this investigation and get Ayla back home."

Massey said the FBI launched a door-to-door canvass of neighbors to glean any information that may lead them to the little girl.

"We've ruled out nothing," said Massey, whose central Maine agency has combined efforts with firefighters, state police, game wardens and the FBI.

Ayla was last seen when DiPietro, put her to bed Friday night. He called police to report her missing the following morning, saying he found her bed empty.

"I have shared every piece of information possible with the police," DiPietro said in his statement, which was first reported by the Morning Sentinel newspaper.

On Tuesday, a state police evidence vehicle remained outside the home that DiPietro shared with his mother in Waterville.

State police stationed outside the house told reporters that the DiPietros were not there. Their whereabouts were unknown to the public, and The Associated Press could not find phone numbers for them.

While the neighborhood was canvassed, police were checking out trash bins across the city. A stretch of Messalonskee Stream a few blocks from DiPietro home was drained nearly dry so wardens could get a better look, both from the ground and from an airplane overhead, officials said.

Massey said each of the 100 leads that have been given to police was being followed.

Ayla's mother said she's trying to remain optimistic that her daughter is OK. Trista Reynolds said she's trying to keep it together for an 8-month-old son who remains in her care but acknowledges the past few days have been tough.

"Sometimes I think that she's OK. Sometimes I start thinking that the worst can happen. That's how I've been feeling. I lay my head down at night and wonder where she is. Am I going to see her again? Do I get to see her beautiful smile?" Reynolds said of her daughter Ayla. "She's my little girl."

Police said both of Ayla's parents, who live separately, continued to cooperate with police.

"Ayla Reynolds is etched in all our minds and reminds every investigator why it's important to stay focused and committed to the task at hand: to bring Ayla back home," Massey said.

The Reynolds family was advised after meeting with Waterville police to return to their homes 75 miles to the south in Portland to let police conduct their investigation. Reynolds and her older sister, Jessica, were staying in a hotel Tuesday to keep away from the media frenzy.

"I'm watching my sister fall to pieces," Jessica Reynolds said. "I don't think she has any tears left to cry."

Trista Reynolds told The Associated Press that she and DiPietro never lived together as a couple. But Reynolds said a drinking problem prompted her to enter rehabilitation in Lewiston for 10 days in October; she said that although her mother and older sister cared for Ayla during that time, child welfare agents intervened to place the girl with DiPietro.

Last week, Reynolds filed court papers that she hoped would lead to the return of her daughter. The filing occurred the day before Ayla was last seen in Waterville.

DiPietro said Tuesday that although he has sole custody of his daughter, "It has always been my intention to have a shared parenting arrangement with Ayla's mother and I will continue to work towards that when Ayla is returned to us."

Tennessee man faces prison for threats to congressman (Reuters)

NASHVILLE, Tenn (Reuters) ? A Tennessee man has pleaded guilty to making threatening drunken profanity-laced telephone calls to U.S. Congressman Eric Cantor, prompting the House majority leader to praise investigators on Wednesday.

Glendon Swift, 64, pleaded guilty Tuesday to threatening a family member of a federal official and accepted prosecutor's recommendation for a 13-month prison sentence for the October 27 calls, according to court documents. He was arrested November 2.

Swift, who lives in Lenoir City outside Knoxville, Tennessee, called the Republican congressman's suburban Richmond, Virginia, offices, threatening Cantor and his family and prompting an investigation by the Capitol Police and FBI.

The congressman's staff saved recordings of the calls. They included derogatory comments about Cantor's Jewish faith and threats to "destroy" him, according to court documents.

Swift admitted it was his voice on recordings and told FBI agents he "got drunk the other night and started cussing people out," according to court documents.

According to the FBI, the profanity-laced remarks included, "How about if I rape your daughter? How about that, if I come into your house and kill your wife?"

Swift pleaded guilty in federal court in Knoxville. The charge carries up to 10 years in prison, a $250,000 fine and three years of supervised release.

Swift's attorney, federal public defender Jonathan Moffatt could not be reached for comment Wednesday. The congressman's office deferred to law enforcement about case details, but conveyed the congressman's response via email.

"Leader Cantor appreciates the dedicated service of law enforcement and the U.S. Capitol police for their continued efforts to keep members of Congress and their families safe," spokeswoman Laena Fallon said.

Sentencing has been set for April 4.

Senate delays decisions on Obama financial nominees (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? Senate on Saturday postponed until next year decisions on whether to approve President Barack Obama's choices to lead agencies that oversee the implementation of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street reform law.

Several of Obama's picks are waiting to be confirmed by the Senate, including Martin Gruenberg to be chairman of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp, Thomas Hoenig to be the FDIC's vice chair and Thomas Curry to lead the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency.

But Republicans refused to sign off on the list, complaining that the White House did not give them assurances Obama would not use a long congressional recess to make temporary appointments.

As a result, the Senate will hold a series of "pro forma" sessions between now and January 23, when legislative action is expected to resume, blocking such "recess appointments."

A few outstanding nominees, such as Obama's pick for the U.S. ambassador to Moscow and assistant secretary of state, managed to win approval during the Senate's last day of work for the year.

Also, the Senate Finance Committee approved on Saturday the administration's choice of Mary Miller for the Treasury Department's top domestic finance post in charge of overseeing using policy and the implementation of Dodd-Frank.

As well, the Senate panel backed longtime government aide Alastair Fitzpayne to be the Treasury Department's chief legislative affairs official.

Miller and Fitzpayne must still be confirmed by the full Senate.
